Black Holes

I am always asked about black holes. Read this and see if you leanrn anything about them. Are they really black? Go to the link and click on Learn More, then read Black Holes Stranger than fiction.  could black holes be a way to travel through the universe?  When were they discovered?

  1. Black Holes are always something that makes me go Wow! Space is so amazing and mind boggling. Students are always asking me about them. Read about them and do some more searching about them

  2. Black hole are amazing but they are not always black what they do is they will some times suck the gas out of diffrent stars to usen it for color. They were discover in the 1960s. Black hole may be a way to travel in time because in the link they were talking about how they make stuff called jets which could take you light years.

  3. I agree with Mrs. Martz. Black holes are pretty amazing. I do hope one day we will be able to take a shuttle to go into the jets and space travel because i think it is possible.

  4. I learned a lot more about black holes, and what I did learn is that they are really black, because it consumes no energy or matter. Black holes probably could not be a way to travel through the universe because the link describes that the black holes wrap around space so strongly that nothing can escape from it, so if we tried to travel through it we would never get out. Black holes were discovered in the 1960's when a physist named John Archibald Wheeler named them, because it emits no energy or matter so it looks completely black.
Black holes are very interesting and amazing to learn about, I wonder a lot of things about them and I hope to study and get into them more.

  5. it doesnt say when black holes were discovered, but black holes were named that in the 1960s by a physicist named John Archibald Wheeler because of the fact that they emit no energy or matter and it looks black, kinda lake a hole in the universe.Black holes are very interesting to me, but its hard to fully understand them because they're complicated (at least its hard for me to fully understand them)

  6. Black holes are really cool to learn about. I never knew they could be the brightest things in the whole univers. i thought they were just black. I wonder what it would be like if earth got sucked into one. What would it be like and would it change our planet? I think it would be kinda scary if a black whole was near planet earth but also pretty cool. I also didnt know that they were discovered in the 1960s by John Archibald.

  7. Black holes are amazing and powerful, they compress the mass of
12 suns, or a mllion, or a billion into a pinpoint of almost infinite density! This gravitational influence extends far from a black hole's center. It warps the space around the black hole so strongly that nothing can escape from it - not light or radio waves or powerful spaceships! Since a black hole emits no energy or matter, it looks completely black, like a hole in the universe. They can encompass a volume of space that's bigger than our solar system. A black hole may shine brighter than almost anything else in the universe by surrounding itself with a disk of superhot gas.

  8. black holes were named in the 1960s but the year they were discoverd didnt say in the articles. black holes usually are black but somtimes they have a little color to them.we still dont know if we can travel through them.i think it would be very risky to try to travel through them

  9. If no one ever seena black hole directly how do they know so much about it? How do they make the models when they never seen it before. It's werid that they call it a black hole when it may shinealmost brighter than almost anything else in the universe. Its cool how nothing can escape the black hole not even light or radio waves! I always wondered where a black whole goes to, if we get in it will we time travel or be gone forever? But i guess I wont find out untill someone or thing tries it out

  10. I learned a lot about black holes, and what I did learn is that they are really black because it consumes no energy or matter. I think black holes would not be a good way to time travel because the link says that the black holes wrap around space so tightly and strongly that nothing can escape from it, so if we tried to travel through a black hole we might never get out. Black holes were discovered in the 1960's when a physist named John Archibald Wheeler named them because it doesnt give off energy or matter so it looks completely black.
Black holes are very amazing and interesting to learn about. I wonder a lot about black holes and I hope black holes are one of the sujects we get into this year.

  11. black holes come in a many diffrent of masses and sizes, their structures are all alike. a black hole's entire mass is concentrated in an almost infinitely small and density point called a singularity. This point is surrounded by the event horizon - the distance from the singularity at which its escape velocity exceeds the speed of light. also a rotating black hole is surrounded by the ergosphere, a region in which the black hole drags space itself.

  12. A black hole surrondes itself with superhot gas. The gas stolen by stars. Some black hole may shine brighter than anything else in the universe other are super dark. The black hole was discovererd in the 1960s.

I aggree it would be very risky to travel in black wholes because you never know if you will survive or how to get back out of a black whole. I heard they take you to different galexys and i dont know how you would be able to get out of them.

  15. Yes i agree with anothony popy they are amazing and they will evenjaly blow up andkill us all

  16. Gravity spots all the other forces in these objects. It compresses the mass of a dozen Suns, or a million, or a billion into a extremly small point of almost infinite density. Space and time are squeezed out of existence, and the structure of the universe turns into a "foam" that's ruled by physical laws that scientists do not yet fully comprehend.

  17. that is cool how you measure black holes by the stars movement and speed aaround it and the gases around it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. black holes atre very cool and are neat because even the fact that they are called black holes dose not mean they are they can be many colors this happens when time sucks the color out of stars for diffrent colors. i think that black holes could 'warp' us back in time but it sounds pretty fishey to me. black holes were discovered in the 1960s

I agree with you on those questions.Yeah that was what I was thinking. How do this people who report to the link know so much about black holes even though they havent see one. What do you think about how the people who report to this link know so much aout black holes without seeing one?
I think they base the looks of a black hole on the information and data scientists have collected over the years.

  22. I think black holes are cool to learn about but they arent always black, sometimes small black holes they steal gas from the surfaces of stars and use it for color. Black holes make jets which is a powerful magnetic feild that travels at the speed of light and it may be a way for faster space travel. I think that would be interesting to learn more about.

I learned a lot including that black holes are really black since a black hole emits no energy or matter, it looks completely black, like a hole in the universe.Black holes most likely couldn't be a way to travel through the universe because the link tells that the black holes wrap around space so strongly that nothing can escape from it, so if we tried to travel through it we'd never be able to get out. 27. Anthony, When they say that you can time travel and all that stuff what i don't get is how they know so much when in the if no one ever seen a black hole directly. And how do they know what the black holes would look like to make a model?

  29. since black holes are spinning they are basically whipping spce around at a large fraction of the speed of light.Gravity trumps all the other forces of nature in black holes. to reach a point of almost infinite density black holes compresses the mass of a dozen suns, maybe a million, or even a billion! the structure of the universe is turned into what people say to be a "foam". theese physical laws not even scientists fully comprehend yet. space and time are completely squeezed out of existence. the gravitational influence in the black hole's center warps the sapce around it so strongly that nothing can escape from it. not even light, radio waves, or powerful ships. physicist john Archibald Wheeler coined up the name black hole in the 1960s. black holes look completely black since it emits no energy or matter. they can pretty big too. they hold the volume of sapce bigger than our solar syatem. surrounding itself with super hot gas black holes may apear very bright. black holes are very interesting andi can't wait to learn more about them!

Earth couldnt be sucked into a black hole because if it was it would be smashed, because black holes have almost 12 imes more mass then our sun. And even if we got close enough we wouldnt be able to go in because it is brighter then anything in the universe so the earth would just exploed from the heat.

  34. no there not always black some are red some blue and even orange... so there not always black there also diffrent colors.we dont know because we've never been through a black hole and we've never been up close to one.so we would not no if we could travel through the universe through a black hole.in 1960 when a scientist was looking through a telescope and saw a spec of color in the sky and saw gases coming off of it and fund somthing new in are universe. he didnt know what it was he saw a number of colorful things and nothing else so he called it the black hole. david holbrook

  35. Anthony we couldn't send anything in there because a black hol takes everything in and doesnt let anything escape. We could send somthing in but the radio transmision would be blocked and the black hole wouldnt realese it so we wouldnt know what would happen.

Black wholes were discovered in the 1960's by a man named archibald wheeler. 39. Black holes were discovered in the 1960s. They compress huge amounts of mass into a pinpoint area, and gravity warps space around it so that nothing can escape. Light and radio waves can't pass through them. Some of them absorb gas from a nearby star and then shoot it back out as it'd spiraling. These are called "jets", and can span thousands of light years. I think that black holes are awesome, except if you get sucked into one.

  40. Black Holes were discovered in the 1960s by John Wheeler. Black Holes appear to be black because they contain no energy or matter. Sometimes superhot gas sourrounds it causing it to be one of the brightest things in the universe. It is possible that we could travel through the universe with Black Holes but once you get sucked in, where do you go? That's the thing i dont get. If you enter a Black Hole, where would you possibly end up? Would you be there forever? Or would you end up somewhere else in space?

  42. A black hole is an object with such powerful gravity that nothing can escape from it, including light. I never really knew much about black holes except that they're in space. That's pretty much all I knew. But now I think they are so cool! I never imagined that once something is in the Black Hole, they could never come back out.&& They actually are black. I'd love to see one for myself. And I agree with Mrs. Martz, they ARE amazing. I'm happy you made a blog about this.

You answered my question about space travel. I wasn't sure where we would end up but I figured nothing would get out. I agree now that space travel wouldn't work at all because nothing and no one would escape from it once they've entered. It's impossible in my opinion because not even light or radio waves could escape! That means there is no way space travel would ever work through Black Holes.

  69. These blackholes are a mystery. I think that people don't know much about them, so they make things up. Unrealistic things. And people are scared of them. Have you ever heard someone say that people are scared of the unknown? I think that's true. Since it's nearly impossible for people to travel inside of a blackhole, they don't know what it looks like. For all they know, there could be a whole other world on the other side of that blackhole. On another note, blackholes aren't even really black! They are some of the brightest things in space! It said so in that artical. They were discovered in the 1960's I think. And who knows? Maybe some day we'll be able so travel through a blackhole! But I think that journey will take a lot of planning and time.

  70. No, black holes aren't black. There made up of many elements like heliem and hitrogen. I think once scientests know more how about black holes work they couldn't but if they prove that we can escape of the gravitational pull I suggest not going in the black hole. It is also interesting how the black holes make up most of our Milky Way.

  74. The name of the "Black Hole" was created by John Archibald Wheeler in the 1960s. Since a black hole doesn't give out any energy or matter, it looks entirely black, it kind of looks a hole in the universe. Black holes can be as big or even bigger than our solar system. I think this is insane! How can Black Holes be bigger than the WHOLE solar system! How is this possible? In the article, it says that nothing can escape it. If there was a black hole where a spaceship was heading to how would they react? Could they react fast enough to get away from it? It also says how they shine brighter basically than anything else in the universe by surrounding itself with a disk of hot gas. Does the gas appear in color? How does black shine bright? If nobody has ever seen a black hole, how do they know this much about it? How do they know so much about back holes from other things that happen? How do black holes affect other things? Sometimes scientists and their methods confuse me.

    ReplyDelete
  75. @ Deborah: I was wondering that too. If they say that blackholes are so dangerous how do they know for sure? Have they ever sent a person into a blackhole? And if they suck stuff inside of them, how do the scientists get so close?

And another thing: Since blackholes are spinning around space and they suck stuff inside of them, does that mean that it sucks up like, floating debris and things?

Some people belive that you can get from one end of the universe to the other by useing black holes by using jets. somthing that scientist plan to make that cn take you light years. Black hales do have color and they get it by sucking gas out of stars and make it thier own color. 90. I always heard that black holes would stretch you lik spagehtti or disintigrate you while you are being sucked in.
it emits no energy or matter so it appears black.
I read in a book that is called UNIVERSE that many spiral galaxies have a black hole at their center.
Some of the largest black holes are billions times larger than our sun.
when a sun explodes it will either turn into a white dwarf which much is smaller than earth but weighs a lot more.or it will turn into a black hole.
a black hole is made up of a small dense point called a singularity.
the event horizon surrounds the singularity, and surrounding the black hole itself is the ergosphere which actualy drags space.

actually it isnt surprising that we havent found a way to travel through time because 50 yrs isnt a lot of time in the big scheme of time. i wouldnt be surprised if we didnt find a way to travel through time for the next 100 yrs.

  96. I agree with Anthony I think it's amazing that they take there color from stars, I also think it's amazing that we might be able to travel through time with them.

  97. I agree with madison that nothing can escape from a black hole because it is soooo strong

  98. Black holes, other wise known as a "warp" in space. Thats how Albert Einstien thinks of it.
I have never realy known much about Black Holes. But now I think that they are very interesting.
Did you know that the surface is not solid, it is called the event horizon! And it is pretty much no return for anythat aproaches it!
Also from a distance its isnt different from any other star or object of the same mass
Luckly our sun will NOT become a black hole because it is not massive enough. The sun is not massive enough? But instead of staying a sun forver it will end as a white dwarf, which is a hot dense ball only as large as Earth.
So far there is no evidens of black holes being portals to other places or other times.
    Black holes are actualy black.
Nothing can escape black holes.Powerful magnetic fields might shoot some gas back to space atabout the speed of lightcreating something called "jets" that can strech across many thousand light years. Black holes were discovered in 1960.

I i also wonder that too, if its impossible to get that close and survive then how do they know so much about it, they cant take tests. But if we can know this much without taking tests imagine how much we could know if we could take tests and see it.

  100. Most black holes are not black, but then again some are. I don't think you could travel through the universe using black holes, and they were discovered in 1960. Black holes are one of the many wonders of the universe, at least I think so. I mean, what else do you know of that swallows up anything in its path?

    ReplyDelete
  101. Im wondering how a black whole could be the brighteset thing in the universe when its called a black whole you would think it would be the darkest thing in the univerce. I think its cool just to look at a whole that is dug up and to see how far it goes down. kristan Dalton

  102. Kyle,
Sometimes black holes are black, sometimes they are not, and I agree with you that you wouldn't want to travel in them.

    ReplyDelete
  103. black holes have to much gravity that nothing can escape from it.Yeah they are really black because it takes in energy. They were discovered in the 1960's.Black holes are very cool and i would want to learn more about them.

  104. Breandon,
wow i agree we should learn more about black wholes i never relised that black wholes could be that cool.

  106. Black Holes were discovered in the 1960's well thats what the link said. I think black holes are a way to travel through time because in the reading they were talking about jets. I mean come on when do you put jets in the same topic with black holes now you know somethings up. Right?

    ReplyDelete
  107. also caleb a lot of things amaze you!!

    ReplyDelete
  108. Some Black holes are black, like holes in space. And some suck in gas that can change their colors. You could not travel through one because you wouldnt be able to get out. They were discoverd in the 1960s by a scientist named John Wheeler.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I agree with Anthony Papathanas post because, he and I agreed on basically the same thing but im confused about the jets thing from the link.

  110. Gee i wonder Mrs.Martz how many kids ask you this a year ? Also what do you say when kids ask you questions. Well whatever these things are im pretty sure they will be great.

    ReplyDelete
  111. i learned that some black holes are black .and that sometimes they suck out gases from different stars.black holes were named in the 1960s

    ReplyDelete
  112. I don't know alot about black holes but i do know some like a black hole is a hole in the fabric of space-time, like a deep well into which matter and energy may fall but may never exit. Because they never emit energy. but if we did go to the blask hole then we would of cource die. even if we did have on the astronaut suit. but i know that we wouldn't go to space in the first place

    ReplyDelete
  113. i read that the biggest black hole ever weight about 18 billion suns and about the size of a entire galaxy now knowing that black hold suck up everything in there paths i says steer clear of this one because when they say this 18 billion massive black hole is big there not kiddin

    ReplyDelete
  114. black holes are black and yet they can have the brightest light. Black holes are amazing and that they pull the gases from near stars and cause light or color which can be seen from light years away. It's amazing at what black holes can do.

  115. i agree with tony but if you take a shuttle up in a black hole chances are you wont make it out

  118. Black holes are very interesting things. I didn't know they are really black because they look lit up to us. I also found out that why they look lit up is because it surrounds itself with a disk of super hot gas recieved from the surface of a star. Its amazing how the gravity of a black hole can pull from 1 to a billion suns into it.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Black holes aren't really black. They seem black because there is no energy. These holes couldn't be a way to travel to another universe because it will suck anything up. They were disccovered in the 1960's when John Archibald Wheeler named them because of their color.
    -Kaleigh McCarthy

    ReplyDelete
  120. @ Stephanie O'leary I have also heard that the color from the black whole comes from a dying star. And yes, it would be risky to travel in a black whole

    ReplyDelete
  121. @ Sara Dirr
Its hard to believe that our sun even as big as it is, couldn't become a black hole because it is too small. It's hard to imagine how big the suns that become black holes are.

    ReplyDelete
  122. No i don`t think to much about black holes but i would think it could be usefull if we could create a controlled minature black hole. Then we could learn more. Like we could fit a camra into the hole and see where it leeds. Really i say all we know is that a scientist named John discoverd them and that things get sucked into them. All of the other things i bet are`nt completely accurate.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Black holes are not really black, and surprisingly they are the brightest objects in the universe. I don't think that we can travel through them because the super hot gasses would burn the ship before it reaches the core. Black holes were discovered by John Archibald Wheeler in the 1960s. Traditionally, we have believed that black holes are a death trap and that if you ever went near them you would be sucked into the center and never be seen of again.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Ian has a really good point. We could actually send a remote controlled mini camera into the black hole and see where it leads. There is one problem with that idea...how could we make a camera strong enough to withstand the black holes gravitational pull and heat all at the same time. Is it possible that at some point in time we might actually come up with that kind of technology and not put our astronauts at risk?

    ReplyDelete
  125. Black holes are amazing but just because they have black in the name doesn't mean they are black. They hole will suck gas out of stars to make them seem black.we discovered them in the 1960's.
    Andrew Hudson

    ReplyDelete
  126. I agree with Anthony-It would be awsome for one day to go to space in a shutle to study black holes to a whole new level with today's technology.

  127. black holes are not really black. scientists say that the suck colors out of stars and that gives the black hole color. They were discovered in the 1960's. i agree with Abby Jaspers, they are really interesting to learn about

    ReplyDelete
  128. Wow black holes are really interesting.black holes are really black because they have no matter or energey.black holes could not be a way to travel threw the univers because the link said a black hole wraps around space so strongly nothing can escape so if we tryed we would be traped in side. Black holes were discoverd in the 1960s when a physist named john archibald named them. I hope we get to learn more about black hole they seem really interesting

  129. They look black but not always, some times they can be the brightest thing in the whole universe. Some times black holes suck gas out of stars and get color. You might be able to time travel, in the article it talks about jets that could take you light years away. They were discovered in the 1960's by John Archibald.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Madison makes a good point, since black holes are wrapped around the universe, no one could travel through them, you get sucked in and cant get out.

And Abby is right, it would be strange if Earth got sucked into a black hole, what would happen to the other planets and how would we get light and heat, could we still get it from the sun?

    ReplyDelete
  131. VELASQUEZ, YAHANZ
I knew black holes took in stuff in the universe, but never imagined them to be that big. I also thought of black holes as being very dark and not colorful, but learned their surface can be very colorful and shine brighter than anything in the universe because they can steal the surface of stars or pulverize stars to make them brighter with hot gasses. Black holes can suck in a lot of suns. With that gravitational pull they can suck in light and radio waves and spaceships.

    ReplyDelete
  132. VELASQUEZ, YAHANZ
I AGREE WITH OWEN THAT BLACK HOLES ARE NOT COMPLETELY BLACK, BUT HAS OUTER LAYERS THAT ARE VERY COLORFUL. I ALSO AGREE WITH HIM THAT IF YOU DO TRY TO GO IN THAN YOU WILL BE BURNT OFF WITH THE HOT GASSES SURROUNDING THE BLACK HOLE.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Black holes aren't really black, but I'm pretty sure they're formed from Dark Matter, once you're caught in it's pull, it's a one way street, one way in, no way out. Unless you can enlarge a worm hole to fit inside and go back to where you have started.Or you can shrink to the size of a photo Plankton. Yep microscopic size. But what I still want to know, what is on the other side of a black hole??

    ReplyDelete
  134. Yes Anthony Black Holes are amazing. The only thing is, we don't know a whole lot. For all we know there could be a few holes that lead to other dimensions!

    ReplyDelete
  135. A black hole is a bizzare object in space that warps the space around the black hole so stongly that evry thing around it that nothing can escape it, not even a space shuttle or radio waves or even light! The nam "Black Hole" was given by physisist john archibald. Since a black hole emits no energy or matter it looks completely black in the sky, like a hole in space. The biggest of them can encompass the volume of space bigger than our solar system system. It would be absolutely ginormus. Although somtimes they are very bright not always black. Gases are in them from many or 1 star. The gas from the surface of the stars spirals like jets before they became a black hole.
I found this article very interesting and I learned more about black holes. I would like to discuss this in class.

you're right, black holes are really cool to learn about. I never thought they'd be the brightest thing in the universe. that' pretty interesting! they are actually balck though, they just surround themselves with super hot gas so they seem very bright. it would be very bad if we got trapped in a black hole because nothing can escape from it. so it would not be fun. our life and planet would A LOT different if that happened. i hope it doesn't!

    ReplyDelete
  142. @ jenna:
that is insane how black holes can be as big as if not bigger than the solar system. i can't imagine a black hole that large. i was wondering the same thing, how do scoentists know so much about black holes if they've never seen one before. i mean they can't even go near them. their equipment can't either. it would be sucked into a hole of darkness never to return. and how does black shine bright? it's black so i have no idea.

    ReplyDelete
  143. @ michael:
i didn't know that the gas in black holes came from stars in it. that's pretty neat!

  147. Nothing can escape black holes. Light, radio waves, not even a powerful spaceship. Scientists think it's a warp in space, a currature caused by matter. Planets, stars , and galaxies have a stronger gravitational pull. Karl Schwarzchild found out if you squeez enough mass into a small enough volume, it's gravity would almost be imfanintley strong. It would warp the space around it so strongly that nothing could escape from it, not even light. They think there are millions of black holes that inhabit the center of our galaxy and many other galaxies. Black holes come in a variety of sizes. The smallest can be a few times the sun and a few miles in length. The largest can be bilions the size of the sun and could swallow our whole solar system. They are all fundamentally the same.

    ReplyDelete
  148. I agree with Ethan because it may shine bright but it is still black.
