Erosion

Now that you have made you first post and read this link, how would you define erosion? Explain what happens during erosion and the various types.
What is erosion?

  1. Erosion is the process that breaks things down. As far as we're concerned, erosion is the breakdown of the the land around you. The overall effect of breaking down and weathering the land is called denudation. Denudation is the process of erosion. In nature, large things are broken down into smaller things. Mountains are rained on and become hills. The pieces of the mountain become smaller pieces. Weathering and erosion always happen in a downhill direction.

  2. erosion is when things get broken down into smaller things for example when rain or an ocean touch and rub against rocks for a long time it turns into pebbles or sand

  3. Erosion is really cool. Erosion is pretty much making hills and sand it make stuff become smaller. There are various types like Mechanical and Chemical those are both very cool.
Mechanical is like hitting it with a hammer and chmical is like pouring acid over a rock both cool.

  4. Denudation is a good vocabulary word, but not one that we will use in our discussion of erosion and deposition.

  7. Erosion is the prosses that breaks things down. Its breaks down all the contents of land. The overall effect of breaking down and weathering the land is called denudation.Denudation is the process of erosion.Large things are broken down into smaller things. Boulders become sand and Mountains become hills. Erostion takes a long time to happen but makes big changes when it does.

Mountains get rained on and become hills and the pieces of the mountain become smaller. Denudation is the overall effect of breaking down and weathering the land. An example of denudation is when it rains, the rain runs down a mountain and the rocks get washed away. Erosion happens at the top of mountains and under the soil.

  9. I also agree with kaleb what erosion is just breakdown of compounds around us. Is effects the continents and canyons the most.

  10. Erosion is the process that breaks things down, it breaks down the continents and the land around us. During erosion larger things are broken down into smaller things, which then can be broken down into even smaller things. Like a mountian into a rock, and then a rock into sand. Water, wind, humans, or just about anything can cause erosion. Another term for erosion is 'denudation'.

In nature large things are broken down into smaller things. for example boulders become sand, mountains get rained on and become hills.erosion always happens in a downhill direction.erosion happens at the tops of mountains and under the ground.water and chemicals get into the rocks and break them up.erosion in one area can actually build up lower areas.when a mountain erodes the river carries sediment downstream to the ocean. Then sediment builds up over time to make new wet lands.

  14. Erosion is the process that breaks down any land mass, a mud slide is an example of Erosion, water is washing away trees and other holding materials to move dirt and cause everything to go down hill for the inhabitants, LITERALLY. Weathering is a type of erosin when weather causes the masses it is falling on to break down. Dedundation is the process, or events of erosion, mainly nature or some toxicity, but it weatheres anything. Mudslides are easy to compare with Erosion, but its happening everywhere, whenever you step on gravel, you roll them around, this is Erosion, when a river is hitting against an Island, thats Erosion, even right now, when it rains, it's causing erosion to dirt, rocks and buildings, we are even eroding the lands right now, everytime we take a step on the floor in RRMS, we take a little wax off the floor, basically nearly everything is causing EROSION.

During erosion, objects become smaller like a boulder into sand or a mountain into a hill.
Erosion and weathering will always be in a downhill direction. Also erosion happens on top of things like mountains and under the soil.
Erosion can also build things up in one area that is lower.

  17. I agree with Abby, it takes some time for erosion to happen, but when it does happen you can really notice it, like the Grand Canyon, over the years and years of erosion the rock has been washed away and now there is so much shape to the canyon.

  20. I would difine erosion as the process of breaking things down into smaller peices. Its where the land is breaking down bit by bit. like when it rains and the water runs down a hill or a rock falls from its place on a mountian. but erosion takes place over a long period of time.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Megan:
I didnt know until today that erosion happens on top of mountains.
So now that we know about terosion happening on the top of mountains how do you think that canyons and valleys were made?

  22. Erosion is the process that breaks things down slowly or sometimes quickly. Erosion is also the breakdown of land around us.The effect of breaking down and weathering the land is denudation, denudation is the process of erosion. there are two types of erosion. 1) Machanical 2)chemical
Machanical is basicly breaking a rock with a hammer.
Chemical is like putting acid on a rock and letting it desolve it.

  24. i would define erosion the life cycle of a rock or landform. what happens during erosion is that the water is wearing a little bit of particles away. after a certian amount of time this could become a huge pile of sand. the various types of erosion are erosion . deep erosion and sedimentry all of these wear away at rocks and landforms

    ReplyDelete
  25. I agree with Sean,
Mudslides are a very good example of erosion, when it rains and the water rushes down the mountian, taking rocks and trees and sand with it, causing the mountian or hill to have more shape or get smaller.

Such as when a large things are broken down into smaller things. Boulders become sand. Mountains are rained on and become hills. Erosion can happen at the top of mountains and under the soil. Also Mass wasting can happen two ways. First mechanical, similar to breaking a rock with a hammer and then chemical, similar to pouring acid on a rock to dissolve it.

  32. I think that is is cool that erosion can actually build things up in one area.I didnt know that.
I always thought that erosion always turned large objects into smaller objects over a long peroid of time.
Do you think it takes as long as erosion to break down objects then erosion to help build things up?

    ReplyDelete
  33. wow erosion took more than I thought and I didnt know people can be part of erosion.Denudation is the process in witch bigger things are made in to smaller things.Erosion is not only caused by water but by wind and two part of rock hiting together or rubing together.

    ReplyDelete
  34. i agree with rachel i never new that either that erosion can build up in one area that is soo cool

  35. Rachel
i think Canyons and Valleys were made from either an iceberg carving through a hill or there was once a giant river flowing through them and weathering away the the rock.

    ReplyDelete
  36. It may LOOK cool that the land around us is getting smaller, but this would mean that most of the coastal states would become thinner each millenia, but thn again part of the dirt would hit the ocean floor, some would create islands, but there would have to be a base before the dirt arrives, probably a large volcanic rock, from an extinct volcano would work, or just a flooded area. But the Bayou's in Lousiana, it wouldn't last the next 1,000 years. So enjoy what you see now, the world is a mud ball and its going to go splat here soon.

  38. I agree with you Abby about how mountains can become hills. For example the grand cayon may one day because it use to be bigger but now it has eroded and changed from water and wind. Also i agree how erosion takes time. Grand cayon has been there a long, long time and there has been changes but its still huge. It would take a long to for erosion to change it completely.

  39. Erosion is the process of breaking down into smaller opieces. I always think of it as 'rotting away'. Denudation is the process of erosion, it is when a mountain gets rained on and turns into a hill, or when a rock gets grinded into sand. Erosion can be caused by anything, but the main ways are water and/or wind.

  40. Madison,
I like your example of erosion.
    Also, denudation happens during erosion.

  41. Erosion- is the process that break things down. Breaks down the land around us.Denudation is the process of erosion. When EX: mountin breaks down it is now a rock, but when the rock breaks it will be a smaller rock or sand. Denudation is a process of erosion.I can be a part of a erosion of a moutain. If I see a rock, pull it out of a mountain. Then throw it down on the ground then i am part of the moutains erosion

    ReplyDelete
  42. YAHANZ VELASSQUEZ denudation is the break down of weathering. when rock gets rained on, it gradually gets smaller.
erosion breaks pieces apart from its whole and then breaks that piece into smaller peices.
when somthing breaks down it does not dissapear. this is called mass wasting.
different colors on a rock describe what happened to it.
when a mountain breaks down, sediment falls and the river carries the sediment to the ocean and that sediment creates new wetlands.

  50. @abby

Thats is so true. It makes a huge difference in the world when thing erode. I wonder how the world would look if there was no erosion. Example: sand from the ocean, they are from mostly shells that was broken down but if there was no erosion how would the ocean look? there is even sand on the bottom of the ocean but what would be there if there was no sand?

  51. kaleb i pretty much said the same thing as you and shane did you copy word for word.

  52. erosion is the process in which land is broken down. the effect that erosion and weathering causes is called denudation. this is the process of erosion. large things are broken down into smaller ones in nature. a few examples would be mountains becoming hills, and boulders becoming sand. erosion and weathering are always in the downhill direction. the pieces of mountain become smaller and go down the sides of the mountain.
Erosion is not hard to understand. if you were to say, take a rock from a mountain you are then part of the erosion of that mountain. this is because you have taken a large object, mmeaning the mountain, and have began to make smaller objects out of it, this meaning the rock. if you threw the rock on the ground it could break into smaller pieces of rock (sand). it does the same thing when it rains. the rain washes the rocks of a mountain down the side. soils get washed away aswell. if erosion is washing and rotting things away all the time where are they going?
All of the rocks, and sand that are being weathered away don't just disappear off the earth. they are moved from one place to another. this is called, what scientists say to be mass wasting. Mass wasting is the loss of matter in one place. this can happen in two ways. one way is, mechanical weathering. This is similar to breaking a rock with a hammer. The other way is chemical weathering. this is basically the same as pouring acid on a rock to dissolve it.
A great way to find out what is happening is to check the color of the rock. if it is weatehered by frost there will be no color change. but it was weathered by the ocean there should be one.

  53. Deborah, I agree. Anyone can be a part of erosion in a mountian or a hill or something. Just by taking a small piece of it and letting it go can do a lot. It could cause the whole mountian to collapse, or to form a new small mountian from sand or small rocks. The thing i am wondering is that is erosion good, or bad for the earth??

  103. erosion is the process of breaking things down like rocks and other things like if a rock is in a river and the river is washing up agaisnt it. the water will wear and tear the rock away. until there is a gaping hole in it or possibly the rock is nothing more like the grand canyon how after many many years the wind and water rushed through the grand canyon the were many signss of where the river went through and how big the river was.so you can see how erosion can turn big things into smaller versions of itself and if you throw a rock and break it. you are a part of its erosion because you are breaking the rock down into smaller pieces just like erosion would do.

  115. Denudation is the process of erosion. An example is rain, when it rains water beats on rocks and breaks it into little rocks, or sand. It is when you take little things on off big object

  116. How would I explain erosion? Well I would explain it like this: Erosion is a natural scientific cause that changes the earth with solid, liquid and gas.
During erosion, the earth will shift in small ways. Weather it's something small like water in a stream to an avalanche, those things change the earth. Even rain after a while can wear away at some things and their shape will change.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Erosion: The process that breaks things down is erosion. Denudation is the process of erosion. When erosion happens the mountains are rained on and become hills, the boulders turn into sand or in other ways large objects become small objects. WEathering and erosion always work downhill.
    @Rachel Royer
Did you just learn that? I just did i also put that Montains become hills, when i thought they just became rocks, can they become rocks and not be a mountain or hill at all?

  118. @ kyle lemmick
Yes, erosion is what breaks down rocks, but I am not sure if weathering is moving the bits of material to different places.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Denudation (the fancy word they used for erosion) is the process of wearing down on objects. The 2 types of erosion are mechanical and chemical.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Erosion is something of nature that breaks things down. They get worn away and things start to slide and get chipped of rocks and boulders and mountains and even canyons !

    ReplyDelete
  121. Erosion is the process that breaks things down. As far as we're concerned, erosion is the breakdown of the continents and the land around you.The overall effect of breaking down and weathering the land is called denudation. Denudation is the process of erosion. In nature, large things are broken down into smaller things. Mountains are rained on and become hills. The pieces of the mountain become smaller pieces. Weathering and erosion always happen in a downhill direction.

  124. Erosion is the wearing away of objects. The Grand Canyon is a good example of erosion. The river at the bottom of the canyon has sliced its way through the rock causing a giant gap in return. There are two different types of erosion, chemical and mechanical. Chemical is similar to pouring acid on a rock to dissolve it. Mechanical is similar to breaking a rock with a hammer.

  126. erosion is the process of breaking things down bit by bit it makes my think of the grand canyon and how mountains are formed.erosion is the breakdown of the continents and the land around us.it sounds like that is how the continents were made. like in Asia it must of had alittle erosion because the continent is so big. and in audtralia it must of had a big erosion to make its island.

  129. Erosion is were and tear basicly. There is wind erosion water erosion and genetical erosions.

  130. After reding the article I can notice that if you drop a rock of a moutain you are part of erosion. I also know thtwhater can help erode seddlements. And another thing that I learned is that erosion usally happens when there is a downward slope. That is what i learned from this article.

Before we learned about erosion I didn't know that every time it rains some of the land could be washed away and then used to build up something like a swamp or wetland. What do you think about that?

That is a good point that some places must have more erosion because of its size. Do you think that it might effect how old it is? For example, the older it is, the more erosion it has.

  151. Erosion is taking something away or building something up, but the actual definition is the process that breaks things down. There are two types of erosion, chemical and machanical. One is like taking a hammer to a rock another is chemicals under the soil mixing with the rock and dissolving the rock from the bottom. Erosion is always happening in a downhill direction. For example, when we drove through the mountains going to Gatlinburg I noticed the nets on the mountains to keep the rocks from falling onto the road because of the erosion. Has anyone else seen those nets on the highway?

    ReplyDelete
  152. Erosion is when rocks wheres away, when a river takes it down a stream, when you drop it and it has a crack in it or breaks and turns into sand. My defintion for erosion is when a rock gets dropped and gets a crack in it or shatters and turns into sand.

  153. @ Abby Jaspers:

I Agree with you because erosion takes a long time to happen but makes big changes. Erosion does make big change. Like for example erosion built the grand canyon, see erosion makes big changes.

  157. i would say erosion is when things break down and causes weathering and denudation. big things are broken down into smaller things, like boulders are made into sand, it rains on mountains and the mountains become hills then the peices become smaller and go down the sides of the mountains. weathering and erosion always happen in a downhill direction.

    ReplyDelete
  158. I disagree with Abby, erosion doesn't take a long time to happen. Erosion breaks things down little by little but we don't always notice the little changes. We normally don't notice that things are eroding until a long period of time, when the erosion has a big impact on the things being eroded.

  163. @ Drew Vaive:
Yeah that's kind of how I would describe it too. Like it starts out new, and then after a while, weather wheres it down. Then it's so small, that it just doesn't exsist any more!

  164. I think it is interesting how we erosion takes place. I think it allows us to see that masses have an effect on each other. I would define erosion as the process that breaks things down and the breakdown of land around us. Denudation is the process of erosion. When masses are broken down into smaller pieces and two masses have friction against each other it has a lasting effect on the masses. Weathering and erosion always happen in a downhill direction. The dirt and rock that are worn away move to a different place. Scientists call it mass wasting. Wasting is the loss of matter in one place. This can happen is two different ways. One way is mechanical and it is like breaking a rock with a hammer. Another way is chemical and it is like pouring acid on a rock to dissolve it. Scients use a method called surefire to check the color of the rock. If there is color, chemical may be taking place. If there is no color, it may be mechanical.

    ReplyDelete
  165. @ George McFarren:

I had no clue Erosion could build things up either! I think it is really interesting how smaller masses can build up to larger things. I guess when the mass that is worn away is taken to a different place all the mass that is there builds up to be a bigger mass.

  179. erosion is when the rock is worn away by other rock, water or wind.
a perfect example of water erosion is the grand canyon. it took millions of years to form it and it will probably eep wearing away until the river stops flowing.
if you go to arizona, statue like rocks have holes through the middle. thats wind erosion. the thiner rock is worn away faster than the thicker part of the rock.
rock and rock erosion i think is kinda like granite. its a bunch of little rocks all packed togethor to form a beutiful sparkly rock.

erosion is just the breaking down of land around us.

  181. Erosion is the process in which bitts of earth are slowly moved by wind or water across land usually taking away parts of mountains and moving the pieces to wetlands or plains to start building up land there which takes a long time for this process. I already knew before I started about erosion.
