Lightning is a bright flash of electricity from clouds due to negatively charged particles reacting to the positively charged ground. It causes more deaths and injuries than hurricanes and Tornadoes. You can see lightning up to 100 miles away, but you can only hear thunder at about 15 miles away, depending on the location. Cloud-To-Ground lightning is when a bolt of lightning makes contact with the ground, this is the most dangerous type of lightning. Intercloud lightning is the most common type when there is Negative(-) and Positive(+) particles in the cloud and the lightning goes off inside ofthe cloud, not to the ground.St. Elmo is when positive charged particles react on the ground with negative charges. They are seen as a blue or greenish glow above pointed objects on the ground. Count how many seconds when you see lightning and stop when you hear thunder. Divide the number of seconds by two and you get the number of miles. High Altitude lightning is when there is lightning above the cloud, you cant see them on the ground, but they are also called Blue Jets, Red Sprites, and Green Elves. They are seen above the cloud. If you see dark clouds, St. Elmo's fire, and you hear thunder,you should head indoors or into shelter. If you see lightning very close, get on your hands and knees, tuck your head in, and hope for the best. Lightning has astounded us for years, we see it in horror movies, movies in scenes where there is a great battle like Lion King, and we see it in pirate and sea stories in bad weather.
