Cool! Finnaly a new planet we could POSSIBLY inhabit, because we are basically screwing up this planet we have with pollution, we now have another place to screw up! UNLESS we can be a bit more Eco-Friendly. Solar Panels I think would work great on the Sunny side of the planet. Does any one have any suggestions on how to save energy IF we ever make it to the planet?

Shane, space is virtually endless. So there will be a GIGANTIC chance for there to be life on other planets, and because the galaxies are going around in circles, we will find a ton of chances to find more life.

Thats really cool. I did not know that there was another new planet so far away. Usually other planets new have any life, but this one does and its cool that there could possible be more people roaming the solar system and living on a new planet. What stinks is that one side of the planet is burning hot and the other side is freezing cold because the giant star only shines on one side of the planet. Wow, the planet, Gliese, is 3 to 4 times as big as OUR moon. A red dwarf star lives about 20 lightyears away. Scientists say that the planet, Gliese, has a rocky surface, so it's not really the best planet to be on at the moment. However, they say that Gliese is tidaly locked to the star. The side of Gliese where the star is shining, it's blazing hot. On the other hand, the opposite side is freezing cold. Researchers say that some sort of extremophile lives on this planet if they can get enough evidince that there is life living there.

I thought that one day scientists might find an inhabitable planet, but it was kind of a fantasy. The only thing that kept me believing was the fact of how big the universe is. I don't think humans will be able to reach Gliese 581g because of how far away it is. The planet is no paradise, however. I find it as a total bummer that the researchers believe the planet is tidally locked to the star, with one side always facing the star and the other in constant night. I never would've guessed that there could be another planet containing life! One question that bothers me is: If we find life on the "Goldilocks Planet", then will there ever be civilization there? This planet is called is called Glisee 581 does not spin so of course one side faces the sun and gets the heat and the other side is freezing cold. Perhaps there is life on this planet. Well even if we are able to live on that planet We will not all be able to go. So I would be hoping more for new species. Possibly could go there get some living life, and transport it back to earth. Meaning we may be able to have new pets. And breed them. The thought of a new planet is exciting, but my thought is that if we would ever get to this planet would it be sustainable for life? The article did say the planet could hold liquids but that doesn’t mean there is water there! The planet could probably hold some species but only some who would be able to survive those temperatures. The planet could be used for room for humans or a polluted wasteland like ours if there is any life on that planet how would we treat it. Would we pullet everything and use that planet as a dump and experiment on the life there. Now that the idea is out there people won’t think about are world and just throw it away, like a toddler who saw a new toy, but what happens to the old toy. I don’t think the new planet well help us but maybe destroy us. The more you ask for and get the more greedier you get. Would you destroy innocent life on other planets to get more room/money or would you stick with your own like its your only one and take care of it.

Some might think it would be nice to have a redo with a new planet because of how much damage we've done to this planet but if you think about it, if we start over on a new planet, we'll eventually ruin that planet also. Instead, we should probably just try to fix our own planet before worrying about other planets with life. The people of Earth need to learn to be more ecofriendly before searching for planets with life.
I think that this is great that we actually found a planet that may sustain life. It's interesting that water is on this planet, and it is in liquid form. What I didn't know is that there are so many planets and moons in our solar system that have water on them. So what the article is saying is that the planets aren't found by monitoring a star and watching the orbiting planet affect it. Marissa, I think you are absolutely correct. I think the damage we've done to our planet CAN be fixed and I think we should fix our own planet before we try to see if we can move on to another one. If we are able to fix the problems with our own planet, we might not even have to move on to another one. We should fix our problems with: saving energy, burning less fuel, recycling, and even just being more active outside preserving nature rather than sitting inside and wasting energy. However, it is kind of fun imagining what life really is like on another planet...if there is any.

This planet sound cold because of it's frozen oceans. It makes me wonder if there could be life on this planet. I can't belive it's been frozen for billions of years.
If I did have all the backround information and knew that it would be safe enough for me to live there I would defenitely go. I think it would be a once in a life time chance that I would not want to miss. What about you? How would you feel about going to a new planet that IS safe?

I heard that the sun only has so much gas to run on and after awhile (awhile being like 3 million years)the sun will explode and burn out. No more sun, no more earth. Shane, space is virtually endless. So there will be a GIGANTIC chance for there to be life on other planets, and because the galaxies are going around in circles, we will find a ton of chances to find more life.

Thats really cool. I did not know that there was another new planet so far away. Usually other planets new have any life, but this one does and its cool that there could possible be more people roaming the solar system and living on a new planet. What stinks is that one side of the planet is burning hot and the other side is freezing cold because the giant star only shines on one side of the planet. Wow, the planet, Gliese, is 3 to 4 times as big as OUR moon. A red dwarf star lives about 20 lightyears away. Scientists say that the planet, Gliese, has a rocky surface, so it's not really the best planet to be on at the moment. However, they say that Gliese is tidaly locked to the star. The side of Gliese where the star is shining, it's blazing hot. On the other hand, the opposite side is freezing cold. Researchers say that some sort of extremophile lives on this planet if they can get enough evidince that there is life living there.

I thought that one day scientists might find an inhabitable planet, but it was kind of a fantasy. The only thing that kept me believing was the fact of how big the universe is. I don't think humans will be able to reach Gliese 581g because of how far away it is. My dad was saying that he thought he heard something about travelling at the speed of light made you age slower, but the pressure would kill you.

I find it interesting that the astronomers say it likely has a rocky surface, gravity enough to sustain an atmosphere, and lies in a temperature range in which liquid water could exist. The planet is no paradise, however. I find it as a total bummer that the researchers believe the planet is tidally locked to the star, with one side always facing the star and the other in constant night. The side of the planet facing its star would likely be blazing hot, while the side pointed away from the star would be freezing cold. :(

I never would've guessed that there could be another planet containing life! One question that bothers me is: If we find life on the "Goldilocks Planet", then will there ever be civilization there? Because on Earth, many people believe that we've let our planet go and that our planet is becoming worse and worse and nobody's taking care of Earth the way we should. So would we try to start over and make a new, healthy planet?

I think it is very interesting that there may be life on that planet. I don't understand how one side of the planet would be in constant sun because wouldn't the planet rotate? Do all planets have an axis? I'm wondering if most of the life would be on the sunny side because plants need sun to survive. is the first planet that orbits a star and could perhaps sustein life. Glisee 581 is not a paradise. Since it does not revolve, one side is always facing the star and the other is facing space. since this happens one side of the planet is blazing hot and the other is freezing cold. I think that living o this planet would be pretty tough. But if it came down to life and death I think that people could make living there work. I t might be tough but Nothin is made to be easy but it always has a chance to work.

The thought of a new planet is exciting, but my thought is that if we would ever get to this planet would it be sustainable for life? The article did say the planet could hold liquids but that doesn’t mean there is water there! The planet could probably hold some species but only some who would be able to survive those temperatures. The planet could be used for room for humans or a polluted wasteland like ours if there is any life on that planet how would we treat it. Would we pullet everything and use that planet as a dump and experiment on the life there. Now that the idea is out there people won’t think about are world and just throw it away, like a toddler who saw a new toy, but what happens to the old toy. I don’t think the new planet well help us but maybe destroy us. The more you ask for and get the more greedier you get. Drew and Sean, I agree with you 100%! Some might think it would be nice to have a redo with a new planet because of how much damage we've done to this planet but if you think about it, if we start over on a new planet, we'll eventually ruin that planet also. Instead, we should probably just try to fix our own planet before worrying about other planets with life. The people of Earth need to learn to be more ecofriendly before searching for planets with life.
I think that this is great that we actually found a planet that may sustain life. It's interesting that water is on this planet, and it is in liquid form. What I didn't know is that there are so many planets and moons in our solar system that have water on them. So what the article is saying is that the planets aren't found by monitoring a star and watching the orbiting planet affect it. Marissa, I think you are absolutely correct. I think the damage we've done to our planet CAN be fixed and I think we should fix our own planet before we try to see if we can move on to another one. If we are able to fix the problems with our own planet, we might not even have to move on to another one. We should fix our problems with: saving energy, burning less fuel, recycling, and even just being more active outside preserving nature rather than sitting inside and wasting energy. However, it is kind of fun imagining what life really is like on another planet...if there is any.
I think that it's interesting that they find a planet that may have liquid water and other sources of life. It would be so cool to, assuming you had enough money, go to another planet for the summer.

I probablly wouldnt want to though because i would be to scared to leave earth and it would be pretty hard to visit friends and family if they still lived on earth.

Planet hunters say they have found the first planet that is just right to hold liquid water and maybe life.The planet gliese 581 is about 3 to 4 times the mass of earth.astronomers say it likely has a rocky surface and gravity enough to hold an atmosphere.temperature is right for water so water could exist on the planet already.this planet is like murcury very hot on one side and very cold on the other so it would be hard to live on.

thats so cool that another planet may have life! even though the tempuratures are werid its still pretty cool. i hope that one day we will be able to travel to goldilocks.

i didnt know that their were other planets in a solar system. i thout it was interesting that it was hot hot on the side with the star, but cold on the other side. it would be interesting to visit this planet but you might not survive, but it might have water at least.

I highly doubt that aliens live on that planet are going to attack us. Im sure there isnt aliens but if there is they have no clue we are here because of how far away we are. We only know of that planet because of our technolagy.
thats so cool! i would like to go to this planet but live in between the warm and cold side because i like warmer weather but like to have cooler weather too. the only bad part is that it's 20 light years away. and it would be so exspensive to move out there.

I am shocked that scientists have found another planet orbiting a distant star about 20 light years away from earth. They also said that it may contain life and it has water on it. It is also interesting that it would not be paradise because 1 side is always facing the sun the other in constant darkness. The daylight side would be blazing hot and the other would be freezing. The star it orbits is a red dorf. The planet's mass is 3 to 4 times larger than earth that's pretty cool. The astronomers say that it is likely to be a rocky surface, gravity enough to actually sustain its atmoshere.

Wow that would be cool to travel to a distant planet that can have life on it. I dont know what side i would want to be on, the cold side or the warm side but if the earth is going to get hit with a massive mederorrite i would move there.

Scientists have discovered the first star orbiting planet that can hold water and maybe life. The planet is named Gliese581g. It's about 4 times the mass of the earth. Gliese581g orbits the star Gliese581. It is 20 light years away from earth and is in the Libra constellation. They said it could have a tempurature that can hold water, and it might have a rocky surface, and it could have an atmosphere. They think the planet is stuck in orbit with the star. One side of the planet faces the star and the other in darkness. The darkside would be frezzing and the bright side would be very hot. There still could be life on Gliese581g.
I think it's awesome that there might be another planet with life. I think it's a little scary because there might be aliens and stuff but I still it's cool. I like to think about cool stuff like this and I think other people should too.

This planet sound cold because of it's frozen oceans. It makes me wonder if there could be life on this planet. I can't belive it's been frozen for billions of years.

@ Sara Dirr: That's good! I don't want to live on any planet accept Earth. But what about when the sun "dies"? I heard that the sun only has so much gas to run on and after awhile (awhile being like 3 million years)the sun will explode and burn out. No more sun, no more earth. Not to sound all depressing or anything, but the main things that Earth and it's people thrive on are sunlight and water.

I have heard the exact same thing about the sun blowing up. We wouldn't survive if that happened. How would it be if it did blow up? Would Earth still exist? Would we be killed by the heat? Would there be a new "sun"?

If it was safe then I would want to go but I would have to wait and see if they send people up. If the first people went up and said it was ok then yes I would go up but it would depend on how the first people saw the plant.
