Volcanic activity is related to the plate techtonic proccess. Most of the active above-sea volcanoes are found near earth plate boundaries.In these plate boundaries there is subduction happening(mostly subduction around the pacific basin) Much more volcanic activity happens where it cannot be seen, under the ocean. Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the East Pacific Rise are both places where it happens the most.
Subductiony volcanoes like Mount St. Helens and Mount Pinatubo, are both examples of composite cones. Composite cones are the explosive kind of volcanoe, that happens because there is too much gas trapped underneath the lava.

I thought that shield valcanos would be a lot thiker. Like sean laake said the shield valcanos are a mile thick but it also said more then just a mile. I was thinking that they would be 3 miles thick not juat 1 mile or a little bit more.

Some volcanoes like mount st hellen's are called composite volcanoes, because they are considered explosive, because the magma is to stiff to escape volcanic gases.These are subduction zone valcanoes.The other type of volacanoe are sheild valcanoes which are not life threatning and they are not explosive and in hawaii labs are set ip to study them.
Hawaii has volcanoes that are sheild volcanoes that resemble a roman soilder's. Some of the Hawaiian's valcanoes are the tallest mountains in the world even taller than Mount everest, becaus3e they are above and under sea level. Hawaiian volcanoes have a broad summit.

Sheild Volcanoes are built out of basalt.they got its name by looking like a warriors shield.they usually appear next to effusive volcanoes,without the effusive volcanoe next the shield volcano, there wouldn't be any around.Some erruptions from the shield volcano create plateaus, and can be found in places such as iceland, Idaho, Washington,and Oregon.they can sometimes measure up to 1 mile in thickness.
Lava will pour out of fissures instead of vents. The volcanoes are located in Hawaii, California and Oregon (USA). They are made from basaltic lava. The volcanoes are more round, and kind of look like mountains in the distance.

A shield volcano looks alot like a cone because basaltic lava is piled up to form gentle slopes that cause these types of volcanoes to look like the way they are. Shield volcanoes can be located in warm places like Hawaii.

The oceanic crust is the floor of deep oceans is 7km thick and made of dense rocks like basalt.
The continental crust is thicker reaching the average of 33km. It is composed of light material like granite.
The core can reach 3000 degrees celcius and the mantle can reach 2000 degrees celcius.
Fluid streams will be hot magma with a low percentage of siilica. Hawaiin volcanoes are associated with a hot spot.
