Ohio State Researchers found information that could help scientists predict when Hawaiian volcanoes are going to erupt. It also suggests that Hawaii maybe holds thermal energy.
Julie Ditkof discovered that magma is an average of 3 to 4 kilometers beneath the surface of Hawaii.
Barton and Ditkof determined that there is one large magma chamber just under the entire island chain that fuels the Hawaiian volcanoes through many different vents.

One thing researchers have found is the finding of a new way to gauge the magma chamber which can help them predict when Hawaiian volcanoes are going to erupt. This also shows that Hawaii has a good poential for thermal energy. Magma lies about 1.9 to 2.5 miles under Hawaii. There is one large magma chamber that fuels many Hawaiian volcanoes through many different vents.

@ Megan:
How do you think that one large maga chamber can fuel so many Hawaiian volcanoes??
Also do you think that the magma chamber feeds more than just Hawiian volcanoes??

Reachers have found information can help scientists predict when the next Hawaiian eruption will happen. It also shows that Hawaii may hold thermal energy. Julie Ditkof found that the magma is an average of 3-4 kilometers under Hawaii's surface. Barton & Ditkof think that there is 1 large magma chamber under the entire island chain that also fuels the Hawaiian volcanoes through many different vents.

Ohio State researchers have found a new way to moniter the volcanoes in Hawaii, this will help predict when the volcanos will erupt next. Barton and Ditkof have figured out that there is a huge magma chamber under the entire island and all of its links. This is why the volcanoes will erupt in different spots between the whole island.

they found some things that could helpn them with volcanoes and when they might erupt.julie dikof found that magma is 3 to 4 kilometers below hawaii

Ohio State University researchers have found facts that could help scientists predict when a hawaiian volcano is going to erupt, they also found that hawaii could hold thermal energy. Julie Ditkof (a student at ohio state) discovered that magma lies 3 to 4 kilometers under the surface of hawaii.Ditkof and her professor, Michael Barton determined that there was one huge magma chamber under the whole island. They also found a new technique to find out the pressure inside the chamber to predict more accurately when a volcano is going to erupt.

Ohio State University researchers have found a new way to gauge the depth of the magma chamber that forms the Hawaiian Island volcanic chain, and determined that the magma lies much closer to the surface than previously thought.

I agree with Megan Sheridan. That is the exact information from the site.

The finding could help scientists predict when Hawaiian volcanoes are going to erupt. It also suggests that Hawaii holds great potential for thermal energy.

Julie Ditkof, an honors undergraduate student in earth sciences at Ohio State, described the study at the American Geophysical Union Meeting in San Francisco on December 14.

For her honors thesis, Ditkof took a technique that her advisor (Michael Barton, professor of earth sciences, developed to study magma in Iceland, and applied it to Hawaii.

She discovered that magma lies an average of 3 to 4 kilometers (about 1.9 to 2.5 miles) beneath the surface of Hawaii.)

I think this article was verey interesting i think i might want to be a volcnooligist when im older.

Another reason why I agree with Megan Sheridan is because the information is very good and she is good at finding information.

Magma lies 3 to 4 kilometers below hawaii's surface. Also there is one large magma chamber feeding magma to all the hawaiian islands. Barton and Dikof came to this conclution after analyzing 100 magma samples. Hawaii has huge geothermal resources that haven't been tapped fully and quickly added that scientists would have to determine whether tapping that energy was practical -- or safe.
"You'd have to drill some test bore holes. That's dangerous on an active volcano, because then the lava could flow down and wipe out your drilling rig." says Barton.

Ohio State University researchers have found a new way to gauge the depths of the megma chamber that forms the Hawian volcano chains. Also the megma is closer to the surface than they thought earlier. THis could help predict when there will be eruptions. Hawaii also might hold thermal energy. THere could be 3-4 kilometers away form the megma.

@ Megan Sheridan
I cant belive that there is only 1.9 miles away from the megma and i also found that there could be thermal energy found.

Hawii might hold theremal energy. They predict that some day the volcanoes in hawii will erupt.Julie ditkof disvord that the magmahas an avergage of 3 to 4 kilometers underneath the surface of hawii.

Researchers at Ohio State found out that there was information that could help predict when Hawaiian volcanoes are going to erupt. The information said that Hawaii may hold thermal energy. Ditkof discovered that the magma in the Hawaiian islands averages around 3 to 4 kilometers beneath the surface. Diktof and Barton helped determine that there is only one big lava chamber under the islands chains that fuels Hawaiian volcanoes in various vents.

The article states that the Hawaiin island are volcanoes. It also states that the magma is anout 3 to 4 killometers beneath Hawaii There is a giant magam chamber underneath and scientist have already predicted when it will erupt.

Jerod 100 magma samples would take a lot of research don`t you agree.

Ian, when did the scientist say the volcano will erupt?

Rachel: How and why do you think one large maga chamber can fuel so many Hawaiian volcanoes?
Also do you think that the magma chamber feeds more than just Hawiian volcanoes? Since this it's such a large chamber i bet if it erupted it would cause a lot of damage.

the hawwinan volcanoes having many diffrent plumbing tunnels for it travel into. The crust in Hawaii has been solidifing from eruptions for more than 300,000 years now. and still has not erupted. and that the averge depth under iceland is about 20 kilometers under ground. magma lies just 3 to 4 kilometers under hawwii

i agree with megan sheridan because yes it has not erupited yet and hopfully never will ???????????? i think

They discoverd that the magma lies 3 to 4 kilometers (about 1.9 to 2.5 miles) beneath the surface of Hawaii. Nowthey know the chamber is at a shallow depth not seen any where else in the world. The crust of Hawaii has been solidifying from eruptions for more than 300,000 years

Rachel I dont know the answer to either of those questions but i think we will find out, or we could research it.

Ohio reasherchers found ou information that could tell us when some Hawaiian volcanoes will erupt and that there is alot of hot energy under Hawaii.they also figured out that there is a big chamber that has alot of tunnels going in and out of it that lead to other volcanoes in the area.

i agree with stephine, that lady figured out that there was 3 to 4 kilometers of magma under there.
