New Zealand Earthquake

On Friday an Earthquake occured in New Zealand. Read the following article and reply to the questions I have listed.

New Zealand Earthquake

1. Where in New Zealand did this earthquake occur?

2. What was the magnitude of this earthquake?

3. What prior quake did they compare this one to? Why was the damage less in the New Zealand quake?

4. What happens to the tectonic plates in New Zealand?

5. When was the last major quake in New Zealand?

6. How many earthquakes occur each year in New Zealand?

Any other thoughts, comments or concerns .....

It happend in Christchurch NewZealand and I think the magnitude was 7.1 but the aftershock of 5.7. they compare the earthquake to hati's,and this happened by two tectonic plates caliding two make an eaquake. 14,000 earthquakes happen each yaer, but the last major one was on July 16, 2009.

The earthquake hit in Wellington, A southern New Zealand island. The magnitude was a 7.1 earthquake. This quake was compared to the one at Haiti. The damage was less because New Zealand has strong and well built structures. New Zealand sits on a part of earths crust where 2 tectonic plates collide, and in the past years New Zealand has moved 12 inches closer to Australia. The last major quake was a 7.8 quake July 16,2007. New Zealand has about 14,000 earthquakes a year.

THey compared this earthquake to the one in Haiti. There was less damage because the structures are well built compared to the ones in Haiti.

The last major quake in New Zealand was July 16, 2009.

About 14,000 earthquakes occur in New Zealand a year.

This earthquake occured in either Wellington or Christchurch, New Zealand. The magnitude of this earthquake was 7.1. They compared this earthquake to the earthquake in Haiti. There was less damage in New Zealand then there was is Haiti because the buildings had stronger foundations. The tectonic plates collided and hit each other which made the create an earthquake. The last major earthquake in New Zealand was
July 16, 2007. There are abot 14,000 earthquakes a year in New Zealand.

The earth quake was in the southern part of NewZealand. With a magnitude of 7.1 compared to haiti. But i dont think so i mean only two people were injured un wellington. Wich happend because the plates collided. The latest earth quake was on July 16 2009. But NewZealand has around 14,000 a year. WoW! Thats alot.

-the reason the dammage was so much less in new zealand is because the structure of the buildings were built stronger in newzeland
-the 2 tectonic plates collide
-july 16, 2009
-more than 14000 quakes happen per year

Wow, I know 7.1 is very high, and the after shock was 5.7.Ohio hasn't gotten any, at least harmful, earthquakes like that. And I imagine it was that strong because of the ground there. It's kinda rocky, and dry. They also compared it to the one in Haiti. It was less harmful, but just as destructive. I feel so bad for those people!

WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake damaged buildings. Haiti...and the damage was not as bad because when this earthquake accured..the power was cut and people were just shaken to the ground...also there were only 2 injuries. The tectonic plates collided witch cause the earthquake. The last major earthquake happened on July 16th, 2009. New Zealand has about 14,000 earthquakes a year.

1. Where in New Zealand did this earthquake occur?

The earthquake occurred in Wellington, New Zealand.

2. What was the magnitude of this earthquake?

The magnitude of the earthquake was 7.1.

3. What prior quake did they compare this one to? Why was the damage less in the New Zealand quake?

They compared this earthquake to the earthquake in Haiti. The damage was less severe in New Zealand because the buildings were stronger in New Zealand than in Haiti. Less buildings collapsed on people in New Zealand, therefore not causing as many fatalities or injuries.

4. What happens to the tectonic plates in New Zealand?

New Zealand sits above an area of the Earth's crust where two tectonic plates collide. That's why minor earthquakes are common in New Zealand.

5. When was the last major quake in New Zealand?

The last major quake in New Zealand occurred in South Island's Fiordland reigon on July 16th, 2009. It was a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that actually moved the southern tip of New Zealand 12 inches closer to Austalia.

6. How many earthquakes occur each year in New Zealand?

New Zealand records more than 14,000 earthquakes a year. However, only about 150 of these are felt by residents. Less than 10 a year do any damage.

New Zealand residents are used to earthquakes they can barely feel, much less ones that do any damage. I'm glad there hasn't been any fatalities yet. Although their home is destroyed, most of the people in New Zealand are safe. That's one thing to be thankful for.

The earthquake happened in Welling, an island in southern New Zealand. The magnitude of the earthquake was 7.1. This quake was compared to Haiti's earthquake and caused less damage because New Zealand had well built buildings and structures, so the earthquake did not affect it as much. When two plate tectonics collide it makes an earthquake. WEllington, The earthquake hit in Wellington at 3:45 am. THe earthquake was compared to Haiti but was not as much damage because the building were not as strong in Haiti. In New Zealand the 2 technonic plates colide. Last year on July, 16th the last mayjor earthquake it at 7.8 mangitude, but the one that just hit was 7.1 mangitude. THere are over about 14000 earthquakes that hit New Zealand but only about 150 are felt by the people in New Zealand

The earthquake happened Wellington, New Zealand. It was a 7.1 magnitude. This earthquake was compared to Haiti but the Haiti hurricane was way worse because in New Zealand it has strong built structures. The two plates that New Zealand sits on collided and caused the earthquake. In the past two years New Zealand has moved 12 inches toward Australia. 140,000 earthquakes happen each year in New Zealand.

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake occured in Wellington, New Zealand. Welington is a southern island and the earthquake caused a widespread of damage. They compared the quake to the one in Haiti, which was a 7.0 magnitude but the New Zealand quake suffered from much less damage. New Zealand suffered less because they have well built structures. The tectonic plates collided which caused the earthquake. The last quake that hit New Zealand was on july 16, 2009. Around 14,000 earthquakes occur in New Zealand each year.
