A very small number of garnets are pure and flawless enough to be cut as gemstones.alot of of garnet mining is for massive garnet that is crushed and used to make abrasives. The different varieties of garnet have different metal ions like iron, aluminum, magnesium and chromium.very few of them have calcium.Garnets all are quite hard, ranging between 6 and 7.5 on the Mohs' hardness scale. They also lack cleavage so when they break they break into sharp pieces. It got its name from the Latin word granatium which means a pomegranate because small red garnet crystals were thought to resemble pomegranate seeds. In the United States only a few companies in three states Idaho, New York and Montana produce garnet for industrial use.Today most of garnet is used as an abrasive blasting material for water filtration in a process called water jet cutting and to make abrasive powders.

My mineral is Coal. Coal produces 23% of all energy production in the united states. It is formed by compression and with varying pressure, different types of coal form. There is 4 types of coal. Lignite: Increased pressure and heat causes buried peat to dry and harden into lignite. Lignite is a brownish-black coal with high moisture and ash content and lower heating value. Is generally used for electricity. Lignite can be found in Texas, North Dakota, Louisiana, and Montana.
Subbituminous Coal:Is Lignite under even more pressure and is darker that its younger brother. It is used for heating and electricity. Can be located in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Washington and Alaska.
Bituminous Coal: Is under an even greater pressure in the mantle. It is even darker but softer that Subbituminous coal. Can be found Appalachian Mtn. and the Midwest. Also used to make coke.
Anthracite: Is under the greatest pressure in te lower mantle and is very hard compared to its softer sisters. It is very hard to find and it is located in Mt. Everest and the Himilayas and locally the Appalachian Mountains. Closer to Pennsylvania. Has a great energy capacity and is hottest coal, creates the most electricity.

Sulfur:
Properties-bright, lemon yellow, non-metallic element, sulfur, is a very soft mineral. It is only 2 on Mohs' scale of hardness. Sulfur was determined to be an element in 1809.
Uses-Mainly is used to make sulfuric acid. Sulfuric acid has multiple uses in the production of chemicals, petroleum products and a wide range of other industrial applications. Sulfur’s main use is in making chemicals for agriculture, mostly for fertilizers.
Other facts-There are no good alternatives for sulfur. Also Mined sulfur is mostly from salt domes or bedded deposits.

Gallium is a soft, silvery metallic element, with an atomic number of 31 and a symbol of Ga. The French chemist Paul-Emile Lecoq de Boisbaudran discovered gallium in 1875.Gallium has some physical properties that are worth noting. Like water, gallium expands as it freezes which means it becomes less dense. Solid gallium has such a low melting temperature (85.6° F, 29.8° C) it will turn to liquid when held in the hand.USES: Gallium is used in a variety of highly specialized electrical applications. Gallium arsenide (GaAs) is able to change electricity directly into laser light. Such gallium arsenide products represent the majority of annual gallium consumption. These products are used for lasers, photo detectors, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), solar cells, and highly specialized integrated circuits, semi-conductors and transistors.

Helium:
I learned that it was not first discovered on the earth, it was discovered on the sun. There is no helium in the human body, and since it is so inert, helium is not harmful to any life form. Helium can be cooled enough to liquefy it but however, it is the only element that can't be frozen solid at very low temperatures.
Propeties: Helium is oderless and tasteless. The discovery of radium in 1898 showed that helium was indeed a by-product of the natural breakdown of radioactive elements.
Uses: It is used in cryogenics to freeze biological materials for long-term storage and later use (24%). It is also used in welding and to create controlled atmospheres. It is used to detect leaks in pipes. Its inert nature makes helium useful for cooling nuclear power plants.
Other Facts: In 1868, the chromosphere of the Sun was studied during a solar eclipse.

I selected the mineral mercury.
Mercury is a heavy, silvery, metallic mineral. It has a atomic number of 80. It is a liquid at room temperature. It becomes a solid at -40F, IT IS DENSE AND HEAVY with a specific gravity of 13.6. I learned some stuff about it I did not know that it is a liquid at room temp and i honestly did not know that it then became solid at -40F. Mercury is used to manufacture chlorine. I am fascinated that it is really toxic.
I am also suprised that it has to be cut back because of its dangers.

I picked diamond,2 different elements are made from the element carbon. the first one is the softest minerals on earth, for example graphite is one of the softest minerals on earth, the other one is the hardest minerals in the world, for example the diamond is the worlds hardest mineral. diamonds can never be cutt or scracht by anything but other diamonds. Diamonds form at very high tempetures and pressure.conditions that are only possable deep in the earths crust or upper mantal. The name diamond is a corruption of the Greek word adamas which means invincible. It was given in reference to diamond’s great hardness. but because a diamond is so hard it will cut threw anything so they are used for grinding and cutting stuff. alot of diamonds are used for wedding rings.
The United States is by far the world’s largest consumer and market for industrial diamonds. It is predicted that the U.S. will lead the world in diamond consumption well into the 21st century. Industrial diamonds are embedded in large steel drill bits to drill into rock for wells to find water, oil, and natural gas. It is also important in the manufacture of machinery for drilling and cutting metal machine parts.

Quartz is also known as Silicon or Silica. It was discovered in 1824 by a Swedish chemist named Jons Jakob Berzelius. It is used in ceramics and in making glass, it can be mixed with aluminum and calcium to be used differently, and when it comes into contact with moist air or water, an explosive chemical reaction occurs and then hydrogen is released. Silicon (quartz) compounds are the most significant component of the Earth’s crust. The atomic number of it is 14.

The mineral I picked is Talc. It’s crystal structure is almost identical to pyrophyllite. It’s the softest mineral on the Moh’s hardness scale with a 1. Because it is soft it can be easily cut. Diamonds form at extremely hot temperature and pressures. This restricts the diamonds to be formed very deep in the Earth's crust or even upper mantle. Large diamonds, large diamonds without flaw, are extremely rare. The flawless diamonds are as rare as gemstones. Most diamonds are small, flawed and colored by dark impurities. These impure diamonds are used in industrial uses. Industrial diamonds are embedded in large steel drill bits to drill into rock for wells to find water, oil, and natural gas. Diamonds will cut through any substance, used in an abrasive and in cutting and grinding applications.
