How are Minerals Used?

Minerals are found in things you use everyday.  Some things you may already know, but some of the mierals you use may suprise you.  Check out the following link:

Complete the following activities, Minerals are Everywhere and Mineral Mix-n-Match.
Make sure to select the 'play again with a new set of objects' choice at least 3 times for each activity.

Once you completed these activites post the names of some of the minerals you have learned as well as the uses for these minerals.

Magnetite and goethite are minerals that have a lot of iron and are used to make steel. Steel is mixed with chromium to stop it from rusting. Chromium comes from the mineral chromite. Illite is a clay mineral used to make house bricks and tiles. Aluminium cans and foil are made from a material called bauxite. Tin cans are made from steel and coated in tin. Steel comes from the iron rich minerals like goethite, and tin comes from cassiterite.

Jenna Duebber: I didnt no that we used all these minerals to make things that we use in our every day lives. Like cement I always just looked at it as cement nothing more.but now I know of all the work by using so many minerals put into it.

Alex Reichling: Gold is also use for dental fillings. Some people use gold for Grills

Ryan Bussard: their is not a mineral called thermometer mercury is used to make a thermometer so mercury is the mineral. and you should know a thermometer is what u get your tempeture taken with just to let you know.

Good thining Drew your right gold dosen`t rust so it would be perfect fo teeth but kind of ugly.
I guess that could be used for many other things too.

Good thinking Drew gold dosen`t rust so its perfect but its kind of ugly. I guess if you need anything that you really dont want to rust you should use gold. And you have alot of suliva and you drin liquids. Then if it rust it could make you sick so use Gold.

@ emma cliffe:
i did not know that aluminum is made from bauxite. also that it's impermeable and squishable. squishable? that's so werid! But then again, wouldn't lots of minerals be squishable since they are formed and made into different things. And, since eveything can be made into a liquid if it hits its melting point wouldn't that mean that it would be squishable.

Jordan,M,Malsbary said...

I agree with Alexandra. Quartz is made ito glass. While graphite is used for pencil lead.

Drew thats funny but so true. Some people may not belive it but its true

quartz is used to make glass both are hard, rigid, imperable, transparent. ANd iron is used for cars

Drew, today thermometers are made of less hazerdous materials like vinager.

In the activities I learned that quartz is used for windows and computers. Gysspum is used for plaster cast. Wolframite is used for lightbulbs. Flourite is used in toothpaste. Silver is used for film, and Bouxite is used in aluminum.

we have talked about gold, its good because its stronger and not able to rust like some.
the thermometer is mercery and we have talked about it.
then theres aluminium, its somewhat hard doesnt weigh that much and dosent rust.

@ Hunter Stemlie
Does hemititehave any other purpose? Cant gypsum be used in plaster cast also? Why is gold used in teeth? I think that is kind of weird because wouldn't that be expensive to havethem put in.

i agree with drew, gold is not rusty and mercurey is in thermometers witch is the red bar that goes up and down.and aluminium is light and strong

Some names of minerals are quartz, gysum, aluminium, limestone,
clay,gold chromium,and iron(hematite).
Examples:
Quartz is used to make glass.
Gold is used to make jewerly.
Clay and limestone are used for ceramic plant pots.
There are many more minerals with many more ways to use them.

quartz is used in glass because it can be formed easily and its transparent for the light to come through.
minerals containing alot of iron are used to make steel cars.
limestone, clay and gyspum are used to make cement.
gold is obviously used to make jewlry. its also used to make electric circuts.
clay is a mineral used to make pottery.
aeroplanes are used to make metal aluminum.
plaster is used to make casts. plaster comes from a mineral called gyspum.
iron and chorium are used to make stainless steel cutlery.
halite is a mineral that you eat: salt.
corundrum and magnetitie are used to make ewmery boards.
