Change in Earth's Tilt

Not only did the Massive Earthquake and tsunami change things drastically for Japan and those who live there, it has also change the tilt of the Earth.  Check out the following link.  What are your thoughts?

Earthquake changes tilt

I think it is amazing how the earthquake shifted the whole earth and it changed the earths axis and it made our days shorter, and moved the continents. What is the tilt of the earth now then? I didn't expect this to happen to the earth just from an earthquake and tsunami. What will happen to the earth now, will it just stay like this or will it go back to how it used to be?

I think thats crazy the an earthquake could do something that big. I wonder how it made the earth to shift 6.5 inches.

I think its interesting that the earth changed but its not a huge change. Its more like 1000ths of a second.

I didn;t realize that a tsunami and the earthquake would be strong enough to tilt the earth more and give us shorter days. I think that it is really neat how it happened, but i just wonder if the earth is just going to stay like this now. ?

japan is wider than it was before. the earthquake changed the rotation of the earth by 1.8 millionths of a second. changes in the atmosphere and glaceirs can effect the earths rotation. although 1.8 millionths of a second isnt that much i think that it still has an effect on earth. anything that moves mass around can effect the earths rotation, but it has to be a lot of mass. the earthquake changed the balance of the earth just like a glacier would and thats what changed the rotation.

i think it is awesome that the earths axis is rotating this colud be shifted or that the gps systems are out of whack and that they are off by some places 13 feet. also i did not exspect the axis to be tilted from just an earth quake

:) Jaspers, Abby (: said...

I think that that is crazy how the earthquake cause the earths axis to shift and shorten the days. The gps stations moved and one moved 13 feet. Now Japan is wider than it was before. The earths rotation changes all the time but with the affect of the earthquake the rotation can be changed 500 times greater. To me this all seems kind of weird because an earthwuake led to many aftershocks and even our rotation to be changed. Now because out earth has changed, they will have to think about where landing rovers and satilites on other planets so they can get them back if the earth moves. This is all very interesting to me and i hope i can learn more about it.

Kilgore, Sydney said...

It was interesting to here that any changes in the atmosphere, for example melting glaciers can change the tilt. This is good that we know this beccause the tilt can affect things including launching satellites and other things to other planets. what surprised me is that the earthquake widened japan as well as shortened the day and shifted its axis by 6.5 inches.

i agree with tommy cecil and that it isnt a big change, but i still think that has an effect.

I think it is amazing that 1 earthquake and 1 tsunami could change the earths tilt and change the length of days. I also can not believe just this earthquake andtsunami have chaged the rotation of the earth. Atmospheric winds can be up to 500 times more powerful then the earthquake and tsunami and the atmospheric winds cause the earths rotation to change a lot. Little tectonic events like earthquakes is what cause mountains to fourm. The largest earthquake recorded was in 1960 in Chili.

Its realy awsome that the earth shifted its axis by 6.5 inches and shortend the day by 1.26 microseconds. Its cool that japan got wider. Its kida crepy that some gps staiions moved 13 inches.
I wonder how much it will change next time it happens. I hope the ice wont effect the earth rotation.

I think that it is kind of weird that an earthquake could change the legnth of the day, or the amount of land on a country. Although the time change was under half a second, it is still a new concept that I have ever heard of and at the beginning I htought that it was scarry but then I relized that it was only the tiniest bit. However, I didn't fully understand. Is the change forever or was it just for that day?

Kilgore, Sydney said...

Madison i agree with you. I think it is amazing hat an earthquake can affect the earth this much. And Madison, i believe the earth will stay like this now until another natural disaster changes the earth.

Park Deborah said...

i think it is pretty scary that the earth's axis changed from one earthquake. I am wondering that if the earth continues to do this what would happen to us. How and why do these huge earthquakes occur? They said that it make Japan a little bit wider, how? They also said that from global warming the ice in greenland is melting which leads to the oceans which can also change the earth's rotation. I think thats pretty scray too.

anonymous said...

the 9.0 earthquake in japan shifted the earth tilt shorting the earths day by just a little bit.the quake made japan wider now.it moved every continent as well and caused a tsunami in japan.no one expected for this earthquake and tsunami to cause so much damage.

I think the earthquake was noteable, but not in a good way. It's obvious to think that something so devistating could change everyone's lifes, but you don't think about it affecting us this way, I mean, the earthquake changed the earth's tilt and length of our days!

I think it is very amazing and intresting how an earthquake can shift the whole earth and its axis and caused our days to be shorter and the continents to move a small amount.I was wondering if there was more massive earthquakes which there probably would what would happen to the Earth? I think that eventually after many massive earthquakes will make the earth turn even more and the axis. Also what is the earths tilt now?

Wall, Alexandra said...

Sydney, I also thought that it was interesting that melting glaciers can affect the tilt of the earth.

George McFarren said...

The days are now shorter than before because of the tsunami. A scientist said that Japan is now wider than it was before. The days got shorter by 1.8 millionth of a second. The earth has shifted about 6.5 inches. The earth wobbles while it rotates, like an unballenced wheel on your car. Overtime all of these samll displacements make mountains and volcanoes. The largest earthquake that has been recorded was in 1960 in Chilie and this earthquake should have changed the length of the day by about 8 micro senconds. For most people these small changes aren't important to them as they are for JPL when they navigate space crafts. The level of the ocean can change the earths tilt also.

Sean Laake said...

To think in the past 50 years, our days grew shorter by about a second. That right there is slow movement. But a GPS station moved 13 feet?! That's amazing but in Chile, if the station would be there during the earthquake, it problably would have been 50 feet or more! But because the axis shifted, wouldnt the seasons shift too? The climates may have shifted a tiny bit as well as the axis. I wonder if this will affect when the moon flies out of orbit? (Does anyone still remember tat little factoid in Earth in Space section?)

kiphart,shane said...

i think that just that big earth quake could cause the axis to change it positions and there has been bigger ones such as the one in 1960 in chili and changed 18 sec.and that it shifted and made the days shorter.

PAPATHANAS,ANTHONY said...

Ii agree with tommy. The time change is only 1000th of a second something that we dont even rellize. but later on it could be a bigger issue.

George McFarren said...

I agree with Adam I don't think anyone thought this earthquake and tsunami could cause this much damage.

Evan Triplett said...

That is cool how the earthquake changed the time of day by 1.8 microseconds and how the station moved 13'.So now japan is wider than it was before.I thought earthquakes were just plates moving not earth tilt changers

Hailey Hoover said...

the earthquake in japan tilted the earth's axis making our days a little bit shorter.it in fact got shorter by 1.8 millionths of a second. now that doesnt seem like much but its enough for scientists to notice. most of the time, the length of the day changes from atmospheric winds. the affects o9f the wind can be 500 times more affective than the earthquakes. the change in the day length affects how scientists navitgate spacecraft. anything that moves mass around affects the change in rotation. it has to be a large mass movement foer something dramatic to happen. all of these things happening from earthquakes will eventually cause mountains to form. for japan, there are earthquakes there all the time. within that ring of fire scientists having been gathering all kinds of research.

Royer Rachel said...

@ Madison:
I was thinking the same thing as you about the earths tilt. Also do you think that there will be more massive earthquakes that change the earths tilt like the one that happened in Japan?

Also, the techtonic plates probably will cause another earthquake in a while, but probably not in Japan(we hope not)

that something catastrophic might happen to the other living things on earth that could be dangerous or even fatal to us.Maybe if more and more earthquakes would happen, that maybe the earth might tilt so much that we would all be in danger.Maybe there is some way that we as human beings can do to help prevent this from happening again.I feel really bad for all those Japanise citizens that had to go through this and i feel proud that the United States Army and other countries are helping them cope with what happened....

This is crazy! How can something like an earthquake affect the whole earth? Has anything like this happened before? If the Chile earthquake did change the tilt also how can we prove it? This is quite amazing. Will the earth ever go back to it's normal tilt? How does the earthquake rearrange the mass of the earth? If this is a 9.0 earthquake, I can't imgine anything bigger, or worse than this. I think it is cool how the scientists can track this. I mean the worst part of the earthquake happened in the ocean...not on land. If this happened on land, would the effect be the same? Of course, the effect in Japan would be worse.

I think that it is cool that an event like that can have so much power to effect the earths tilt. It is pretty crazy that the earthquake caused all this to happen. I think it may have happened before because The earth is already on a tilt and there probably have been stronger earthquakes.

I thought it was cool how the plate moved 6 and a half inches. Also I think it's strange how a melting glesure can afect it.

I cannot believe that arthquake in Japan was able to shift the earth's axis and sourt of change time by making our days shorter what if there is another earthquake and it's a 9.8 or 9.9 or even a 10 how much would the earth shift and how much shorter would our days be. Also how many lives would be lost.

Sara said...

Mt dad told me about this and how it changed the plates alot. I had no idea that it could change the days of the year though, it shortened the days by 1.26 microseconds! I dont understand how it could quite do that still. Also the axis was shifted by 6.5inches! this is so surprising.

@Kylie Hayes
I agree i had no idea that an earthquake could cause all of this disaster, this only makes me question what will happen next? will it get worse than this?

klingelhoffer,sawyer said...

i agree with you Caleb Huston. they do think its a big deal. unless it is going to hurt us bad than why worry.

That is sweet that it moved the whole planet because of a 8.9 eathquake. I wonder what will happen to Japan and the earth if it some how chaged our planet by a tsunami and an earthquake.

imushrush said...

Wow i didn`t know that would change the earths tilt it now makes are days shorter man i need some SLEEP. But at least it only changed 6.5 inches

Buis,Dylan said...

I think it is crazy how the earthquake shifted the whole earth and it changed the earths axis and it made our days shorter, and moved the continents. What is the tilt of the earth now then? I didn't expect this to happen to the earth just from an earthquake and tsunami. What will happen to the earth now, will it just stay like this or will it go back to how it used to be?

Freeman Andrew said...

That is so weird that an eathrquake could do something like that. I mean serious it made our days shorter and moved some of the continets. I never thought thatour axis could move by an earthquake. What is the angle of the axis now? Will our days resume the same length if not what will happen same thing about the angle.

anonymous said...

I think its insane that the earthquake in Japan could do something that big. The thing I wonder how it made the earth 6.5 inches.

austin tilford said...

Thats crazy how the Earths time is shortened by alittle bit now, because of the 9.0 earthquake in Japan. The earthquake shifted the Earths axis bt 6.5 inches. The scientists gps moved almost 13 feet.

dace,connor said...

I think that this is amazing and very shocking. Only because it moved the continents, melting the ice off of Greenland, it changed the axis and now the earth rotates out of balance. It's amazing how one earthquake can cause so much devastation.

dace,connor said...

@ Austin Tilford
I agree it is amazing how this has happened with just an earthquake.

anonymous said...

I agree with Daniel O'Hern about wondering how the earth shifted 6.5 inches because of the earthquake.

anonymous said...

it moved the axis and it made the days shorter and moved the continents.I am still woried about the people in japan it was so unexpected with the earthquake and the tsunami.

anonymous said...

i think its amazing how one earthquake and tsunami changed the earth's titlt. it was 9.0!!!!! wow big quake!!

I agree with you about how it is strange and all. I also asked the some question aboutwhat the earth's tilt is now. I wonder if the tilt will go back to normal.

imushrush said...

I agree with calab even though it didn`t change the days that much going to other planets will change alot. I mean they got to redo all the grids and timeing just to land on a planet.

madison schnell,
i agree with you because i wonder to of how it will change the earth.

Bettner,Aaron said...

I cant beleive an earthquake can make Earths axis move 6.5 inches. I wonder if another one that is bigger wouldd be able to change it by a whole minute. Japan even moved 13 feet! I wonder if the tilt will ever recover.

Kamilah Williams said...

this is crazy!! I mean the earths axis changing. what more does the earth need. But if the whole earth "shook" then how come the people in the united state didn't feel anything. this is not cool i tell younot cool at all

Dorrington, Madison said...

AT NASA there is a change in the rotation of the earth of about 1.00008 seconds. How does this affect our planet? I think that it is was so encredible that this will probably never go back the way it was and may happen again the future. How weird that the earthquake was so strong that it shifted pretty much everything.

Giblin, Keegan said...

My thoughts about about are not really that big of this movement but if I was a spacecraft manager at NASA i would be excited. This is big moment for history in science but to the outside world I don't think it will have an effect on us in our lifetime.

Bettner,Aaron said...

@ Andrew Freeman
I agree and if it could move Earths tilt why couldnt we feel the quake?

Buis,Dylan said...

i agree with tommy. its interesting that it changed but its not a huge change.

It is amazing I never knew how much the earthquake affected the whole world. It really suprised me how much it tilted the Earth[almost 6 in.]. My question is well it be better for the earth or well it destroy it faster. Could it speed up global warming, could it affect the climet or could it be harmless. I wonder if the earthquaks well just keep getting worse.

i think this is weird how aearthquake can change the whole earths axis and i wnder how it could have moved 6.5 inches .but i wonder if earth will stay like this or will it go back the way it used to be or will it go back to the way it used to be

Dorrington, Madison said...

@ Madison Schnell
I think that it was amazing how it shortned the day. Also to answer your question if the earth will stay the same I think that this will happen in the future again but a stronger. I don't think that the earth will ever go back the way it was before.

Dickerson,Daniel said...

I think that it is cool how an earthquake couuld move earth by 6.5in. It did not effect the length of day noticeably at all. I wonder if over the course of many years, the earth could have 25hours in one day.

Kamilah Williams said...

Madison Schnell- I didnt know that just one earth quake could effect the whole world. this is not right i still wonder how come we didnt feel anything sense we the earths axis move and days got shortern what would the farmers think after we just had a daylight savings creepy how the earth works now isnt

anonymous said...

I never would have thought that the whole earth would be effected by an earthquake and tsunami. I could never imagine that happening here. What all those poor helpless people are going through is scary to realize that what happened there can also happen here. Hopefully this will be a lesson and a wake up call for the scientists that made these nuclear power plants.

Since the earthquake was the largest in Earth's recorded history, I guess it makes sense that it would slightly affect the whole earth. I didn't think the Earth would move as much as 6.5 inches, though. It's amazing and devastating what an earthquake and tsunami can do.

Dickerson,Daniel said...

I agree with Tommy. I think it interesting that it changed, even though not by much. I also think it will eventually make a difference

JennArisara said...

I don't really like the idea that the day shortened because in the future it might get even shorter And when you want to travel to another country the plane rides will be longer, and how about in the future like 20 years later and the continents move even more, a trip to another country will take forever than it does now and it is long

johnsholly said...

i agree with zoey because i also think it is unbilevable what happend in the tsunami

Im also wondering what is going to happen to Japan because of all the damage.

I agree with Daniel Ohearn it is crazy that an earthquake and tsunami could change somthis so dramasticly..... THE WHOLE EARTH!!!!!!

I think it is pretty amazing that an earthquake did that much damage imagine if it was a 10 on the rictor scale what would happen to the earth then.

I agree with Yahanz it may have only been a little bit of change in time but it still effects the earth.

I don't know who Mrs. Martz is, or where she teaches, but I hope that by now she has had her teaching license taken away. She should be ashamed for teaching such patently false things to impressionable children and passing it off as "science". For an adult, and an authority figure, to teach this is reprehensible. To the children's credit, there were quite a few who were thinking for themselves and had trouble believing that it would be possible for one earthquake and a tsunami to change the earth's tilt. Maybe Mrs. Martz would do better to teach them proper grammar and spelling, although she seems to have trouble with that herself. It's no wonder that education in the USA is in such a sorry state, if teachers such as this are allowed to influence the minds of our children.
