The damage from these Nuclear power plants is horrible. The first one blew up and leaked out 3 years of collected radiation that is now in the ground (Water supply could get affected soil and plant could also get affected). Also that now some of that radiation is in the air affecting people within 30 killometer (19 miles). When the second one blew up people were expecting it to those because the decrease in radiation. The 2 explosion destroyed 9 nuclear rods that once they were not in there cantaminet started melting and getting in the ground.

Overall not good.

In Japan people that live within 20 kilometers of the nuclear powerplant have had to leave there homes, all do to an earthquake. I think that this is unfair to the people in Japan and they should clean it up as fast as they can so people can move back into their houses. The radiation is spreading 8,200 microsieverts per hour.

i could imagine all the suffering and feer in all the people in japan that would be so scary.i also think that it would be scary for parents of a newborn baby or any young child. first it started as a bad earthquake then turned into a huge tsunami. i would of freaked out when i felt the earthquake

i thought that it was very sad because of all the people that live in japan. they must be very scared because of the tsunami, earthquake and now the radiation leaking into the air.so much is happening at one time that they dont know what to do .the first problem was the tsunami and the earthquake that they had to clean up after and now they have radiation to clean up after, even though they dont have the mess from the disasters cleaned up. this is probably very stressful for the government of japan.

I think that ever since the first earthquake that had recently happened, everything has gotten worse. The Tsunami destructed everything in it's path, and left a huge amount of people either dead, or missing. I think that it will take Japan a long time to recover, and global warming will increase because of the 3 year naturally occuring radiation was exploded and wasted in a 1 hour time period. I think this nuclear exposion was terrible, and it will deffinetly affect the country.

It was allready bad enough from the tsunami then the nuclear power plant. many people died from this and the nuclear wast is going into japan. it will effect the crops and people will get very sick. i think that people should just have the nuclear power plants some where safe were nothing bad could happen thats what i would do.

the Tsunami is very bad and is destroying nuculiear power plants and the radiation is now just floating through japan. That could have long term affects on the plants and animals. also the Tsunami has done major effects on peoples home and has killed alot of people

i think that they should be more careful and have the nuclear power plant sucure for emergencies if its possible. i dont like nuclear power because when you make a mistake or a disaster like this then it can hurt the stations surroundings. if you could protect these nuclear plants then it would be a safer way to produce energy.

Dangerous levels of radiation are leaking. radiation levels outside the plant reached 8,200 microsieverts per hour. That is more than three years of naturally occurring radioactivity in a single hour. There have allready been parcial meltdowns at the unit's No. 1 and No. 3 reactor. A patial meltdown means that the nuclear fuel rods that make up the core have gotten so hot they started to melt. If they meelt all the way its considered a full meltdown, but that doesn't necessarily mean the radioactive materials have breached the containment structure and escaped. Both blasts were blamed on explosive hydrogen gas coming from the reactor cores.

Evan Triplett said...

I think the explosins are really bad and if the core cooling would have worked then it is likely that many of these would not happen.Luckly many of the people were evacuated and not to many were hurt but this problem will just add more to the problems they are dealing with now and im sure that it not just over yet but they have gone though the worst already.

I cant believe that radiation levels outsiide the plant reached 8,200.microsieverts per hour. Its sad that people had to leave there homes to be safe. The explosion was caused by hydrogen build up as a result of emergency attemps to cool the reactors core. Effertors to cool no.2 reactor with pumped seawater temporarily failed- leaving the nuclear fuel rods inside exposed and rasing the risk that the rods probaly melted.

What happened in Japan is all a horrible natural diaster to begin with. The 9.0 earthquake and then the tsunami ontop of that. The officials in Japan are probably scarmbling to get out of the state that they are in but they are obviously having a hard time. They are without power still and are having to pump sea water into the places with the dangerous nuclear stuff in them. There have already been explosions and Japan is being evacuated if you are with 20 kilometers of the explosion spot and if you are within 30 kilometers they are being advised to stay inside. Overall it is terrible that this is happening and I hope that they can get it solved soon.

Reichling,Alex said...

It would be very bad thing if those fuel rods melted becasue it could burn through the holding chamber and leek out. The nuclear explosion has effected everone in about a 20 mile radious. There was a nuclear explosion a long time ago that casued the kids to get thyroyde cancer,(not in Japan),so that would not be very good if anymore radiation leeked out and reeched people. This might effect their ecomy a lot becasue the radiation could effect agriculture, animals and water supply.

Kilgore, Sydney said...

Madison. I agree with you, it will take a long tie to recover considering global warming and the destruction it has caused. I believe everything has been continuing to get worse since the earthquake and i am beginning to think even worse things will happen. What do you think?

Sheridan,Megan said...

I think what has happened in Japan is absolutely horbble. People that lived with in miles of the power plants had to evacuate and now have no place to go. The earthquake is what started everything off, because then there was a Tsunami, and now the power plant. Everything has just got worse and it will take years to come back together. I feel bad for the many people who lost family members, and I hope that Japan gets back together quickly.

kiphart,shane said...

My ? is how will they be able to stop it how do you stop it from polluting the air and how do you prevent this stoff from happening. the answer is you cant when an earth quake happens you maybe be able to prepare for it but you really cant stop it.and that unit 2 there having trouble with. There shooting sea water into the units to cool them down. hydrogen can be made when the core gets to hot and can cause they units to blow up and that 17 crew members where exposed to low levels of radio-activeness.

I feel that while on monday, we were all complaining about our own unimportant problems, while in japan, there was a nuclear explosion. I also feel that japan needs our help, if we could do even the smallest thing to help them, i'm sure it could make a huge difference. Not only are the people greatly affected, but the earthquake/tsunami/radiation leak had affected the earth tremendously. And you thought you had problems.

Sean Laake said...

I honestly think that this is a terrible crisis. The people first have to deal with a Tsunami, next earthquakes and now RADIOACTIVE WASTE?! As far as I understand, Japan is the most ready location of the world to face earthquakes. And Tsunamii. But Toxic waste leaks? That is something not anticipated. What I think is that not just the residents should be protected, but anything hazardous if destroyed. Such as factorys that store any type of waste that can have a bad effect if released, Nuclear Power plants, coal mines, Gun shops. Just anythng that if ruined can harm anything INCLUDING nature. I aprecciate the fact that they are using a bit more green source of energy, but why not build flood gates and use the water that goes through to form a hydroelectric energy? It can limit the flow so that the flooding is controlable. Also another problem is that to try and prevent the problem, THEY USE FREAKING SALT WATER! SALT WATER JUST MADE THE MATTER WORSE! Now all of their Nuke Power Stations are on high alert meltdown! USE OTHER SOURCES OF ENERGY! There is at least 5 other ways to make electricity!

kaleb.quinlan said...

The power plants are causing mass distruction in Japan people that live 20 kilometers away must evacuate and even people that live 30 kilometers away must stay inside. There is more than three years of natural nuclear radiation has already leaked out of the plant. Both blasts were blamed on explosive hydrogen gas coming from the reactor cores. Hydrogen is produced when the reacters start to over heat. I think that this is extremely bad and is getting worse by the minute. I also think once all this is over it will take yaers to get every thing cleaned up.

Cecil,Tommy said...

The damage done by the earthquake & the tsunami were devastating. Also the reactors are beginning to leak and fill the air with toxic gases. one reactor has already gone off and destroyed the plant and the other can go off any time.

I honestly feel bad for the people in Japan. The earthquake is #5 on the top recorded history of earth quakes. It has a preliminary magnitude of 8.9 and happened near the east coast of Honshu, Japan. So many people lost there homes or even there family. Since Japan is pretty close to being overpopulated, it will take a long time for them to recover.

the radiation levels are dangerously rising from the earthquake that hit Japan on Tuesday. it had gotten so bad that, people within a 12 mile radius was orded to evacuate and people wihtin 19 miles had to stay inside. the levels of radiation outside the plant reached 8,200 microsieverts per hour. thats more than three years of naturally occurring radioactivity in just one hour! how insain is that? the number 2 reacter was rocked a bit from the earthquake and the number 4 is on fire. one of the spokesmen Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency says that the damage could be to the unit's suppression pool. the suppression pool is what surrounds the nuclear reactor. it is only used in emergencies to cool the core. if real damage had happened, then air or water could leak outn depending on where it is. the pressure was dropped in the pool after the exsplosion and the cooling water level dropped aswell. ever since all the disaster, workers ahve been trying their best to control crisis after crisis at the power palnt. many qusetions adressing whether or not they can keep the reactors and the radioactive material inside the plant. hopefully they can.
Overall, i think that its terrible that all of this has happened to the people of Japan. i hope everything turns out okay and nobody else gets hurt.

Wow... they just got hit by an earthquake and a tsunami on firday and now they are saying there is going to be a nuclear explosion! That is forreal crazyy!! If i saw Korea being shook, flooded, and have nuclear explosions my first though would go to my family who lives there. Korea is really close to Japan and if Japan wasn't there Korea would hav gotton hit. I worry for the kids there. Thousands of people had died and thousands of more are dying. My mom showed me on the internet of the tsunami on friday and I will tell you it was really scary even though im the one watching and not the one actually in that situation. The water was so fast and big and it looked unreal. What if Hawaii and the other places being warn gets hit? the world would be a disaster and it would take years to fix. I would hate to see any more damage to the earth.

I wonder why all these things are happening.

Madison Schnell said...

@Deborah; I agree with you, all these earthquakes and tsunamis have been crazy, and Hawaii did get hit, not by the earthquake but by the tsunami, but it wasnt as bad. Keeping the nuclear fuel rods inside the core covered with water is crucial to preventing a meltdown, But the cooling systems for 3 separate reactors at the Daiichi plant have been failing since Friday's magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami knocked out power at the facility. Ever since the earth quake happened I don't think Japan will ever be the same. It moved 8 ft ! I think that's insane I never would have thought that that would happen at all. The Tsunami destroyed everything there, and left a huge amount of people either dead, or MIA. I think this explosion was terrible and it will definitely take a while to recover unless a mirical happens, I feel bad for the people and therre homes.

Pfft, geez. The damage from the hurricane AND the tsunami is just horrible. And now because of the tsunami, Nuclear Power Plants are beginning to leak out and spill. The first reaction of one of the power plants that it leaked out three years worth of collected radiation that's now in the ground. This could cause poor soil for farming and water contamination. Now that some of the radiation is in the air, it contaminates any human being within 30 kilometers (Nineteen miles) When the second radiation leak happened, it destroyed nine nuclear rods, which started melting and conaminating everything and getting into the ground.

There is pretty much nowhere safe to put it. If we put it in the ocean, a nuclear BP spill will happen in the Pacific Ocean. Then all the fish will die off and we'll have less water available to drink. We can't really just move it, because if it blows up again, a different place will be inflicted with radiation. There is nowhere safe to put a nuclear plant.

I feel really bad for the people in Japan. There was something on the news this morning about people who were infected with the radiation. It makes me sad to know that there are so many horrible natural disasters that can ruin people's lives. Also on the news, it said a lot of people were evacuating the country to get away from all the disaster. Lots of people are living in little shelters and they all just want to go home. Lots of people were reported missing and more than that are dead. I hope Japan can get through this.

In social studdies class we atched channel 1 news and we learned about this. Many people were getting radiation tests and the reason they were getting these was because radiaton was spread through the air. the people doing the tests were all dressed in white and had alot of proective gear on. It felt like it was straight from a science fiction movie.

The prime minister told everyone within 20 km to evacuate. If i was i that postioin i would be so affraid. Being told to evacuate by your own leader would be very scary because i would have to leave my home, my school, my friends and family to then head off to a very confusing life much different than it was before.

This expllosion was very different from two other explosions, unit 1 and 3, which were both caused by hydrogen build up.

The nuclear exploisions are going to change alot of peoples lives. many who live by these plants have been forced to evacuate. The radiation will also make living conditions harder. most have to be checked to see if they are carrying radiation. for the people that have radiatio this can be a bad thinng because radiation can diagnose people with cancer and can also make cancer worse for people that already have it

The Damage from the Japanese Power plant is horribly terrible. The 1st(first) that blew up, and leaked out 3 years of collected radiation, now it is in the ground. ( Water supply could get affected soil and plants could also be affected). Since, the radiation has came out people in a 30 kilometer radius should evacuate immediately.(19 miles). When the 2nd explosion leaked out/ blew up, they were expecting the radiation to stop. Also, the 2nd explosion destroyed 9 nuclear rods. Really, all of this is just the worst that's ever happened to Japan!

I would be devastated if i were the one having to live in the trash that the 9.0 magnitude earthquake had brought. The worst thing that the earthquake had done was the nuclear explosion, although it wasn't as bad as the one in Ukraine, it was still pretty bad. Everyone in a radius of about 12 miles are evacuated from this site. People are beginning to be checked for radiation exposure on them. More and more chemicals are leaking out. How sad. Also it is sending big tsunami waves which that is not good for it either.

What happened to Japan is terrible. But sadly the worse is still not over, the necular powerplants are beginning to melt down and if the residents become infected they have a serious problem. The residents that live in 20 kilometers of the nuclear powerplants are being evacuated and scanned to see if they were exposed with radiation. There has already been 2 meltdowns, and the scientists are trying to cool down the cores with anything, hidrogen water ect. One of the meltdowns was because of over cooling and it caused a fire and an explosion. Japan is going through some hard times and all we can do is hope and pray that everything will endup all right.

In Japan the Tsunami affected many people. People evacuated quickly. Ever since the earthquake, everything has gone downhill. The Tsunami destroyed everything in it's path, and left most people either dead, or hurt. It will definately take Japan a long time to recover. The Radiation Plant is definately going to be one of the biggest problems. One of them exploded and released 3 years worth of collected radiation. Radiation can cause cancer, which would eventually decrease Japan's population. I am curious to see how they will try and solve this massive problem.

If i was there. i would feel trumatized.i wouln't know what to do and whare to go because all my belongings would probably be gone or just ruined. I would hope that my family would be okay and i just hope that everyone is still okay and that they find more people in the rubble alive. 8(

I agree with Anthony, Because the damage is really really bad.I think that cincinnati should help Japan.

Day,Tyler said...

I could not imagine this to happen in Cincinnati were we would have to evacuate I think it would be hard to adjust to live somewere out of Cincinnati. Plus people would have to be checked out with a device that would check if you were exposed to radioactivity.

I know! I can't even begin to imagine how people are reacting and how this is affecting their life. I wonder where people traveled to when they evacuated
Japan? How can they afford anything? I feel really bad for them and wish I could help. This will probably take years to clean up.

The dammage done in Japan from the quakes is horrible! I feel so bad for the tons of people who lost many family members in the horrible natural disater! I dint know what i would do if that were me in their position. I was thinking about something watching this story on the news last night. We have had an unexpected amount of natural disasters latley. we had the oil spill in the gulf, and now japan. the reason japan is such a big deal is b/c that country is a big place for importing and exporting goods and another reason is the great amount of people that died in this natural disaster. It makes me wonder how many people survived it but are still out there stranded with no place to go

All the damage caused by the nuclear plants is just terible! The first plant blew up and it leaked three years of collected radiation into the ground, that could affect the water supply, also soil and plants could get affected. Now, the radiation is in the air which is affecting people within 30 killometers. Than the second plant blew up. The 2 explostions destpryed 9 nuclear rods.

imushrush said...

I would be very scared if i were them the radiation from the power plant can be a catastrophe. first there was an earthquake a Tsunami and then worst of all a nucuealer explosion. Which can effect your brain and make you violent stressed out and dumb.

Buis,Dylan said...

I believe since the first earthquake occured everything has became worse. The Tsunami destructed everything in it's path. It left people dead and or missing. I think that global warming will increase because of the 3 year naturally occuring radiation was exploded. I think this will have a huge impact on the country and it will take a while to recover.

Bettner,Aaron said...

Radiation leaked at 8,200 microsieverts per hour at the front gate. More than three years of radaition collected leaked out in the first hour. The number 4 reactor is on fire and the number 2 reactor blue up on tuesday. I think at plants like this should have some sort of radiation cover around it.

I am awstruck right now about the situation in Japan. I think another country around them like China should help them out. Im sure Japan would do the same for them.

There has been tons ofpower plants leaking and ending up killing alot of people. There is a good chance of it exploading and killing new borns, teens, children, and adults. The nuclear power plant if it does expload then about 30,000 people will be killed in Japan.

I feal really bad for all the people in japan that were affected by this terrible disaster. everything has just gone down hill from the spot we startes first the earth quake then the tsunami and now all the power plants i just hope this isnt like the new orleans how its taken them over 4 years to get that place back together but the way things look right now its going to take even longer.NATHAN STENGER

to daniel ohearn they cant just move the power plants somewhere safe it would be way to exspensive

If a 9.0 earthquake was happening were I live, I would be freaking out and I would be scared. Radiation levels reached to 8,200 microsieverts. I would be really sad if my family was either hurt or killed during the earthquake and tsunami.

dace,connor said...

It is both amazing and devastating at the same time. The radiation has multiplied to 8200 microsieverts an hour. I feel sorry for those that had to leave their homes all because of an earthquake. This is outrageous beyond belief.

What happened in Japan was very terrible, Its sad that over 1000 people had died.
If I were in Japan right now, I would be scared to death.
I feel like I want to help but I dont know how I'm supposed to do that because I am just one 13 year old that cant do anything.

It never accrued to me that that Japan wasn’t affected a lot on the earthquake destroying towns but making the nuclear power plants leaking. It could effect health issues and effect the economy, many well lose their jobs and home’s. Supplies would be cut and people well starve. I hope they can contain the problem soon, or else it could be impossible to contain the waste, more or less stop

I agree with the fact of people wanting to escape Japan. It must be scary and hard to leave.

I feel bad for the people in japan. Its sad for the people that live near the nuclear power station. its about 20 kilometers. I wish that we could have the technology to tell us when earthquakes are going to happen. i hate to see this happen to places that people go to vacation on. Now all the food stock is low and everyhting is wiped out. this reminds me of hurricane katrina. Mrs.Martz do you think Japan will get the same treatment as the people in New Orleans did?

that sounds so scarey for the people in the tsunami!! i hope they are ok!! man, it seems like japan is getting all the bad stuff. :( poor them. ha

i think this is very sad all those people had to evacuate their homes because of the nuclear radiation. three years worth of radiation came out in an hour. on the radio i heard the sunami was 13feet tall!!!!!!

I think that this matter is extremely important. Espicesally for the people who were in the "ring" of the plant. this expolision was difrent from the 1 and 3 because they were hydrogen build up. They tried to cool the 2 plant with sea water but tempoarily it doesn't work. The people are now getting tested for radiation because if you have enough radiation you could get some sort of cancer in you body.

the damage that happend was very bad.it blew up and leaked out 3 years of radiatoin that was collected, but is now out and not colcted.their water supply and their plants and soil coul also be contaminated.the radiaton is now in the air and it is affecting them within 30 killometers (19 miles)from them.but when the second one blew up the eople were expecting it because their was a decrease in radiation.the 2 explosions destroyed 9 neuclear rods that once was not in the contaminated started melting and not getting in the ground

Is is just so horrible to see to see that wave of water that went 620 mph and the wave is not stoping and you see the people driving on the high way trying to get away from it you know there dead and its horrible to see it happening right there on TV. and then you have not only the Tsunami but the earthquake did damage to. and with all those people dead you think its over and they can go back and make repairs but no they have a radiation leak now yes RADIATION and it could explode its just bad over there the littlest of good new would life there souls i mean what there witnessiing right now its just i could not think of what there feeling right now its just horrible to see all that happening to one little country. to see that wave come in and take out every house in its path and then it just gets washed back up on the beach. my heat goes with them

What happened in Japan is horrible and suprising. I would have never thought that a nuclear power plant would have that much damage from a tsunami and earthquake. Although I dont know that much about tsunamis. I would like to learn more about them in class this year.

The after effects of the leaking radiation is terrible. I think it is not far that those pepole who live within 12 miles had to leave. Also the pepole who live 19 miles within the plant have to stay inside that isnt far to the kids who want to play outside. I personaly werid that the leak can get into the water supply and comtaminate the water. Its scary to think that 3 years of radiation started to leak. I hope that there is a way to clen up the radiation before it gets to out of hand.

To: Madison Dorrington,
I had no idea you could get cancer from radiation! I wonder what is in the radiation that causes cancer? What are your thoughts about this?
